12-10 strip

Post by Archae99 »

Ralph, you forgot something VERY important in the 12 -10 strip, last two panels.

Them all saying "cannonball!" or "cowabunga!" :)

(I used to pull a dandy on my little sisters, in pools. I'd wait until they weren't looking, then do a cannonball, on the way down yell "Hey Gina!" "What do you.....AHHHHHHH!!!!!" *SPLOOSH*)

There was this totally hilarious TV ad a couple years ago, (I don't remember what it was for,) where an Olympic diver does a cannonball and half-drowns the judges.

No offense, but I don't think the situation calls for that. It's much too serious, and any kind of punchline would ruin it.

 Though I do admit I could see Gunther yelling, "Hoo-yah!" It just seems like something he would say.

Personally, I'd rather have not had Christ thrown into the script. It's too religiously specific. Faith is good and all, but I'd rather not read anything that even *remotely* resembles christian propaganda. I dunno, maybe I'm just too sensitive to it after being exposed to Jack Chick tracts.

I had the same reaction to some of the other strips in this plotline.

Dude, if you don't like the fact that Christians 1)actually believe their faith to be true 2)believe it enough to proselytize it---- well, gee, it sure must suck to be you.

Oh really. Now I see how it is. You're just one big self-righteous jerk when it comes to politics and religion. Maybe you should quit shoving it down peoples' throats at every chance.

You can believe in something enough to think it's good for others all you want, but there's a time and a place for propaganda, and a humorous comic strip is NOT that place. You need to learn some restraint.

OK, McFrugal, you've expressed your personal opinions.
I now express mine:
Please note that your words have no effect.
You do not have the power to force your censorship upon this comic.
Your hate-filled religious bigotry isn't getting you anywhere.
Deal with it.

Hate-filled religious bigotry? You're reading too much into what I said. I don't have any dislike for Christianity, I have a dislike for Christians that go around touting their religion like it's some kind of special perfect answer to everything. If anything, I'm *too* open-minded about religion, so when I see someone going around trying to convert everyone they see to their specific personal choice, I get annoyed. I get even more annoyed when it's in an inappropriate situation, like *this*.

The first post on the subject in this thread was just that, an expression of annoyance. When RHJunior tried to put me down for it, I flamed him. See what's going on now?

Dude, if you don't think it's the answer, why are you following it? For some reason, I thought that was the POINT to faith. And also, we've discussed this here before. If you don't like the comic, then just quietly up and leave. You're not paying for it. And no one's forcing you to read it.

Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing, no? Just like you chose to post how you thought this comic was innapropriate, (I've seen this happen before) everyone else here has a choice to pipe up in defense of RH. Just from past experiences, he's not short of support from fans who think the comic's approach is perfectly fine.

I think you may be right. I read from it that you've got a problem resorting to name calling.

*whispers* It's called tongue-in-cheek. You'll come to find I can't take myself seriously very long.

Oh, I do like the comic, and the comic's approach was perfectly fine up to this point. And yeah, faith is great and all, but it's not the beat-all, end-all solution to all your problems, you still need to deal with the worldly aspects of them to get by. Sometimes I feel like the propaganda is saying otherwise. That's what I object to, and also the fact that it tends to insinuate that it's the *only* real, true religion. That's just acting superior, there. I know that's what you tend to think when you find your faith, it's just rude to directly promote it that way. Kinda like saying "I'm right, everyone else is wrong"?

I'd prefer to continue this in private messages, if that's okay, McFrugal.

From what I have been able to tell from his strips and writings Ralph's mentions of Christ in his works stem from a deep and sincere personal belief. Although I do not agree with him on every issue, he does have the right to express those views and beliefs in his writings and works. (As long as he is not preaching 'Death to the Unbeliever'.)

If you look at all of the Under the Lemon Tree strips there is a very strong undercurrent of Ralph's moral beliefs. While it is a comedy strip it has never been competely without this bedrock. Honestly, while the strip is very occasionally a little preachy I have never found it to be in anything other than good taste and low key in its religious aspect. The Shlockverse/Clown story arc has lead me to think about aspects of the spirit that I have not thought about before. While I am not yet ready to become a Christian, Episcopalian, or Catholic, Raph's works have made me think more about these sorts of things in the last two years than in the previous 38 of my life. Threads that I have been involved with in this forum and the Nip and Tuck forum have exposed me to a great bunch of people. And while these threads are normally fairly earth bound the few that have gone into the relm of the spirit have been interesting, engaging, and most of all civil.
I dunno, maybe I'm just too sensitive to it after being exposed to Jack Chick tracts.
As for Jack Chick. Please.. The guy is nothing more than a hatemonger pretending that he is a Christian. As best I can tell he no more represents the beliefs of the majority of Christians than Stalin does. Anyway there are Liberals that make ashamed of being a little left of center. They don't call it the lunatic fringe for nothing.
