Well, what the heck...
OK, the term "Cult" derives from the term "occult" which means "hidden".
In a nutshell (where it belongs) a "cult" is a belief system that keeps all or part of it's beliefs secret (hidden). If a religion's beliefs include anything that only a select group may know. Then to that degree that religion is a "cult".
There are few reasons a priesthood would keep their beliefs secret - and that is either because their congregation would abandon the faith if they knew it, or because the public would rise up against them, if they knew it.
If everything the religion believes is available to everyone - it is not a cult because it is not hidden.
Pretty simple, actually. I wonder why people try to make it complicated?
