In general, I agree with the lady. Action films are entertainment, not reality. I will admit American films are closer to reality than Hong Kong "Wire-Fu."

One could ask, though, whether any medium of art or narrative should really be considered just entertainment. Like it or not, it's going to say something, and it's going to portray something as reality. People should be responsible for practicing discernment, yes. But those who produce it should also be responsible for what they're saying and portraying.

4 EXAMPLE....several elementary students grow up believing 'Hercules' is a story written by Disney...not kidding....there may not be any truth to all the other anti-Disney hype that's usually conspired, but he never had an origional idea in to save his life, and he stole tons of credit from evn his own partners! What's worse is that the company never grew out of his mindset.... They should at least edit their remakes to say 'based on someone else's novel/idea!' or something like that.

That's one thing that always drove me crazy when I hear the "It's only entertainment" line.
If the media, (Video, Audio, or Print) had zero influence upon our lines, then why advertise? Better yet, why don't ads merely show the product and demonstrate its function? (Well, I guess suppositories & toilet paper might have a rough time

When I was studying to be an engineer, one of the first things I learned is to never underestimate a person's stupidity when designing a product. If you idiot proof something so that there's only a one in a million chance that someone could screw it up, guess what, there's 300 of them in the US alone and they all have lawyers.
The media influences people. If you caricature or extol something long enough and loud enough, it will influence opinion.
I agree with Wayfarer, just because someone says "imagine" doesen't make what is going to follow right or wholesome. "Imagine" that the nazis were right in their racist beliefs in WWII. Gee, how far would that idea fly? Why are people so angry? It's just entertainment!
I wish that discernment was a subject we could teach in our classrooms. To keep our children from falling prey to lies and to recognize propoganda when they see it. But if truth is relative, then there is no way to tell right from wrong.

There are not words for my raw hate of Disney. Poccahauntas and Hercules made me hate them, ad that doesn't include their bullshit from when I was tooo young to know that their stuff was as horrible as it was. If I could take over they company I'd make them make a list of evey stolen sotry and every inaccuracy in everything they've done, ptint out portions of it as flyiers and get them distributed, and then show the full list as a 'movie' which would be shown for free. After that was done all disney related objects would be destroyed, and the company would be converted into some sort of manufacturing so it would still exist so no one could try to recreate the name.
Oh, and action flicks are eye candy, lotsa explsions and stuff, and not reality. It's your own fault for not realizing 'hey, this stuff ain't real'.

Dragoon, this is the point we're addressing..... but you don't seem to be paying attention.
As was said in the comic, people KNOW that it's all make believe in the movies. But they still RIGHTFULLY expect the story teller to get the little things--- like referenced historical events, factual minutae, and basic science correct.
More to the point we are a visual and auditory species. There is no escaping the fact that we absorb what we see and hear as "factual" long before we absorb what we read in the abstract in a textbook. What we see and hear influences our perceptions dramatically.
Moviemakers with political agendas and no ethics exploit this shamelessly... encapsulating wilfull ignorance, prejudice and propaganda as "entertainment." They plant false perceptions in people DELIBERATELY. The social consequences are disastrous.
