A quick search on scirus.com implicated sulphur, saltpeter and naphtha as likely ingredients of greek fire. That's basically liquid gunpowder. There are other ingredients in some proportion. In any case, this stuff was real nasty.

The thing is, Greek Fire was ignited by pouring salt water on it, that way the more you put on it trying to put it out, the worse it got.

It was usually stored in a strong tube, and when it was used, salt water was poured into the rear of the tube and when it ignited, blew the rest of the flaming mix out the end and all over the ship and men next to them.

To be that reactive with salt water, there had to be something with either sodium or lithium metal in it.....those two elements explode on contact with any water.

We need a time machine to know for sure.
Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye...... Mr. President.

How about lithium hydride? Very reactive and generates hydrogen to boot.

Besides, I have GOT to go back and have a chat with Nicola Tesla and Albert Einstien.......not to mention that I want to know what exploded in Tunguska Siberia in 1908......I GOTTA know!!!!

So YEAH....I'm rebuilding the time machine! :D

The question is, could the ancient Greeks even acquire lithium hydride?

Not sure, but it's great for filling balloons. The trick is getting the fuse not to pop it before you let it go.

I used to generate Hydrogen by dissolving strips of zinc in muratic acid and putting a balloon over the neck of the coke bottle.
