It's Gilly's morally superior and condescending attitude, such as with what kind of coffee Zelda might drink that keeps getting him nailed. For a lot of liberals, there's one set of rules for them, and another set for everybody else. He was told that he couldn't come into the station and that Belle's true ID was a station secret. In his mind that doesn't apply to him...so he forces his way into the station and into the control booth......both acts, which depending on the D.A., could be charged as felonies, scares the hell outta Zelda, and get a face full of Mace for his trouble......and now the Sheriff's on the way. He's brought every bit of this on himself and until he changes is attitude and outlook, he's always gonna be hangin' on to the sh*tty end of the stick trying to pull himself out of whatever mess he's just gotten into.shyal_malkes wrote:well, there goes most hope I had for Gilly turning out ok (even if only relative to how he was before) in the end.*sigh*
And Gully's actually not a bad person.....he's just got his head jammed too full of big city liberal ideology living in a laid-back conservative community. I'm pretty sure that if the folks of Malarkey County didn't want him living there......there are ways, that don't include midnight raids and shallow unmarked graves, the community would "get the message across", and ultimately drive him out.

Side note here.......
Did you know that the typical armed "civilian" (non-cop) actually has MORE latitude in using deadly force to defend themselves than the cops? And on the whole, have less mistaken ID shootings.

Hello Everyone!
I've been a lurker for a few years, but finally decided to step out of the shadows.
If it hadn't been for the last panel of the July 7th strip, I would have dismissed this all as a throw away gag, but his lonely sigh at the end makes me think that this is just a disasterous "first impressions" that many a romantic comedy is founded on. And it was clear from Zelda's first introduction that she's probably a very lonely person too. So I think there may be something there yet.

Bah, just tar and feather him.
Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye...... Mr. President.
There may be something out there for them....
But not each other.
The surest guarantee for grief is to become emotionally involved with someone whose every belief contradicts your own.
And quite frankly, every time I consider giving Gilly a girlfriend, the panicked little voice in the back of my mind goes "but what if he BREEDS?"

Here lies Gilly
The good news is he's dead.
The bad news is that he's breed.

Most people would then respond with a can of Raid.
It might at least catch the younger ones.
I think Solidus has a spare nuke or two we could use, or a suitcase bomb. We just have to watch out when some of the roaches evolve into spambots.
'Course, that's what the legions of borg stashed under the White House are for...
...wait, did I say that out loud?
Crap; where's my neuralizer?!

I'm lost. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, please ask me to wait. Thanks.

As he is, Gilly is just a running gag like Kell's brother Ralph in the Kevin & Kell comic strip was and he went from running gag to real charater.RHJunior wrote:There may be something out there for them....

With time and more character developement he could move toward the middle between the two political extremes and become a deeper character.
I was wondering, in that July 7th strip, was he sighing due to loneliness or was he pining for a lost love?

well, everyone's kids usually end up like (but not exact clones of) their parents, BOTH parents. so if he has kids with someone local, odds are they'll only be partially like gilly.RHJunior wrote: "but what if he BREEDS?"
hmmm... same ideals as gilly but just enough knowledge of local traditions and customs to cause some trouble... heh heh heh...

More to the point, there's also the tendancy for some children to rebel against their parents' beliefs..shyal_malkes wrote:well, everyone's kids usually end up like (but not exact clones of) their parents, BOTH parents. so if he has kids with someone local, odds are they'll only be partially like gilly.RHJunior wrote: "but what if he BREEDS?"

Now, consider that, as annoyingly preachy as Gilly is, his kids will inevitably get fed up with his left-winger attitude.. ...And they're likely to go right-wing just to spite him.

Easy solution - hook him up with a virulent feminist who has no interest in children - her only interest being "the cause".RHJunior wrote:There may be something out there for them....

On the other hand, that might be too evil to wish on even Gilly.

But then Ralph would need to bring in a new character (characture?) to take up Gilly's current duties. Running gag shoes are hard to fill. They choke the ankles.Vinylrecords4ever wrote:As he is, Gilly is just a running gag...RHJunior wrote:...every time I consider giving Gilly a girlfriend, the panicked little voice in the back of my mind goes "but what if he BREEDS?"
