Gilly didn't self-destruct because he admitted guns could be a good thing.
Gilly self-destructed because he admitted guns could be a good thing in front of a bunch of knuckle-dragging wingnuts. Had he been talking with a fellow hoplophobe, there would have been the unspoken assumption shared that such an event - Chicago arming its subjects - would, thank goodness, never happen in a rational world. His listener would have understood the delicate nuances covering why no sane group of sheeple in a civilized area would ever wish to arm themselves.
Yeah. They think that way. It's actually a reasonably self-consistent world-view, it's just that the unquestioned axioms on which their paradigms are based are so far from observed reality that it's rediculous.

Fear of Hopalong Cassidy?
Then I found hoplo refering to a kind of catfish (fear or catfish = fear of guns?) But then I located hoplon (greek for shield, maybe generic for weapon?).
I never owned a gun but am thinking about getting one someday. My sister has around 700 and she offered my my pick (late husband = gunsmith). Any recommendations as to what to look for? (general purpose defense).

Isn't it amazing how these attacks almost always come from someone who has less then a dozen posts in total. Is it a knee-jerk reaction that causes them to post their tirades when they see certain words or phrases used, or could it possibly be some coward who uses an alias to hide behind so they can bait the bear for their amusement without getting bit.
I'm not singling anyone out. I see several of them on different forums.

maybe they only make a forum account so they can later use search engines to figure out when a particular forum is talking about a certain topic or other so they can fit their own two cents in without really knowing what the regular forum goers are like there.

Your first post should never be political. If I ran a forum, this would be a bannable offense.

I hear ya man. It's been a long time. Just got my computer back to running order >.<
Lost all my bookmarks, games, little else though. I saved my pictures, stories, and MP3 collection thankfully.
I still have some heavy explosives left over, care to celebrate the 4th a little late with me? We'll make up for lost time with extra kaboom.

Ouch... My sympathies, man.. I feel your pain. Last week, I had to reinstall Windows three times because I kept getting virus problems...
Saved my pictures and stories, but sadly didn't save my mp3 collection.

Just a thought, but maybe they are lurkers who have read the strip for a while, but...well, I've noticed a lot of people only speak up when they start to get pissed off about something.

Some have posted when they wish to compliment RH as well. Our emotions don't rule us, but they do affect us.
However, those who criticize or complain have a tendency to post less often than those who give him praise. Perhaps it's because of Ralph's personality, or those of the other posters, or they just feel that once they've said their piece they've won the argument.
I sincerely hope it's not the last one. One post doesn't always do the trick...

True.
Maybe the pissed off ones just want to vent? Or maybe they just get thoroughly flamed and decide to go away....

Correct. Actually, Col. Jeff Cooper USMC Ret (Founder of "Gunsite Firearms Training School" in Arizona, and creator of IPSC) coined the term to describe those individuals who have such an illogical and irrational fear of guns that they try to have them taken away from everyone....and this applies to citizens as well as lawmakers.

You'll get lots of recommendations from this forum....that you can count on..

...however, the first question is:...
How much shooting experience do you have?
You've already stated it's intended purpose....are you interested in an long gun or a handgun? And, we need to ascertain your skill level and what you're used to if anything.
We'll be happy to help you.

Narnian, the best choice for general purpose defense depends on what your situation is. For example if you want the gun for home defense a pistol would be best, and of a caliber that won't puch through six walls if you miss. And of course a pistol is required if you are going the concealed carry route. You might want to think of something in the .32-.38 or 9mm range. A rifle would be good if you are doing varmit control or if you are trying to keep people off your property.
I strongly recommend that you take gun safety courses (if you have not already done so), and spend a lot of time practicing with whatever it is you choose. After all even the most powerful gun is useless if you can't hit what you are aiming at. And contrary to what Hollywood would have you belive it is possible to miss a target that is right in front of you with a pistol. Unlikely, but still possible, especially when the adrenaline is flowing. And like my father told me, never point a gun at anyone that you don't want to kill, or anything you don't want to destroy.

Minimal - mostly 22 cal rifle 35+ years ago.

Handgun - rifles would be a tad difficult to use indoors.

This is high on my list - I plan on having the whole family go to class. I want to get smarter on the options before I make a decision - don't want something that is uncomfortable or unwieldly or impractical.
We also have a concealed weapons permits here in Virginia so I will need to learn all of the ins and outs so as not to do something stupid.

I've got a reason to be in Orlando sometime next week, maybe we can make up a cadre? We could try to launch that rocket that's outside of Skycraft.

Your entire post is rooted in this one statement, which I truly hope, for your sake, you do not sincerely believe.
When a customer comes to my shop, I believe he is smarter than I in deciding what he wants done and why. I will ask several questions to clear up any misunderstanding, and then do my job.
When a plumber comes to repair my water pipes, I believe he is smarter than I regarding what needs to be done and how. I will answer his questions as clearly as I can, and let him do his job.
Life is not always a contest of egos, but is often a cooperative effort.
