Calling Dr. Carter a liar?
Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye...... Mr. President.

Shaaruuk, why does my calculator disagree with you?
It says pi = 3.141592654.
It says pi = 3.141592654.

I have no idea. I used the calc in my HP PDA and got that particular answer using a floating decimal to 9 places.Wayfarer wrote:Shaaruuk, why does my calculator disagree with you?

I JUST NOW performed the same function on the built-in windows calculator and got:
pi = 3.1428571428571428571.......to infinity.
If you divide 22 by 7 in long division on paper the above answer is what you will get every time. Regardless of how many decimal places you calculate out to, the FIRST 6 numbers after the decimal will always be 142857.
Hmmmmm....I think I may have part of an answer. I just calculated pi setting the decimal fixed from 2 thru 9 places..the limit of my display. It seems that the lower decimal places required, the unit rounds up the last digit to the nearest whole (decimal place) number. If you only require 3 decimal places your calc rounds out to 3.143. And it's consistant. How your calc came up with the particular sequence you have I haven't a clue.

I hit the pi symbol on my calculator and pressed enter.
I'm thinking 22/7 must be an approximate. Looking pi up on the web, I also find the same answer as my calculator (though a lot of times to a great deal more digits).
Of course, then there's also the random survey I found of people voting for the value of pi. There were a number of interesting options and reasons, but in the end 42 won.

(And yes, I'm supposed to be starting on paper-writing for finals - and stalling desperately for as long as I can!)

You're using a scientific calc?
Oh well....I guess in this case we're both right. I've been using 3.14 as the value of pi since the mid 50's and it's served me too well to change to another value now.
Haven't forgotten about the music, just been really busy driving.

TI-83. Had to get one for math in high school. Kept it because it's now the only one I like. Not to mention the fact that I discovered the draw function and ended up drawing and storing pictures on it.
And I do understand busy, no matter how little my recent posting frequency may reflect it.

Heh, me version is right.
Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye...... Mr. President.

22/7 is very much an approximation. It's the closest fractional approximation and was used in antiquity by cultures that hadn't figured out decimal points yet. There are geometric and algebraic ways to calculate the exact value (Archimedes figured one out), but they weren't easy to perform without computing devices.Wayfarer wrote:I hit the pi symbol on my calculator and pressed enter.

Sorry Sharuuk, he is closer. You used 22/7; which is a fractional equivalent used by lower level math classes. His is more accurate, as 22/7 is NOT all that accurate past 3 significant digits.
EDIT: arg, sorry, I missed a whole page of information saying the same. Sorry that I missed it.
Note to self: When its late and you have come home both tired and a weeeeeeee bit inebriated, do NOT post.

Maybe so for much more crucial measurments and calcs.....but, as the bard once said: "Hey....works for me!"Artemel wrote:Sorry Sharuuk, he is closer. It's all I've ever needed for anything I did that required 'pi' as a factor in the calcs.

Awwww, but it's so much more fun to find the places where they have pi out to, say 10,000 (http://www.csgnetwork.com/piinfo.html)to a trillion (http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/con ... rdid=47055) digits or so...
