Something I've been meaning to ask...

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I haven't gone back through all the previous threads to check. If it has, please point me in the right direction...

Noting Tuck's reaction when he realizes he's in the girl's locker room, How do you blush through fur?

Not that I have any objections to the effect... (Especially on the females :) ) But I am trying to write a story myself and am trying to figure out how one would display embarrassment from the furry viewpoint.

There could be an effect similar to chillbumps, where the fur sticks straight out and makes the skin (and blush) visible.

I know that some animals see different wavelengths of light than humans - maybe it's Ralph's way of showing that animals can 'see' the increased heat of the blush through the fur.

Or it could just be poetic license.

Perhaps the hairs on their cheecks are specialy made such that blood can run through them emulating a brush. ;)

A common way to handle it in writing is to have the ears change color (on the inside, where the skin is visible). There are other parts of the facial area on most animals where the hair is short enough that a flush of the skin beneath would be visible.

I always view cartoons as at least a little bit "metaphoric," i.e. the physics, dimensions and images are exagerated for comic or dramatic effect. It's something of a general cartoon rule. Could a fox really blush through fur? Maybe not but it gets across what the artist wants to convey.

JAM, did you spend the last 20 hours looking up this one strip just to link to it?

Good evening.

No, more like 10 minutes (and that's because I'm on dial-up and looking at other pages). I knew it was around 2002 (before the Reporter story), so I just put in the approximate date on the URL, found the storyline, and then the strip I had in mind.

Thanks for all the help, everyone ! :)

You confirmed some ideas I had on my own, and gave me some good food for thought.

Now to dive headfirst into an embarrassing situation! :)

That didn't come out quite right, did it?
