That cylinder you've hammered flat for for an LP.....was that made of wax or Bakelite?

Hey....I go by experience.....I actually ran into a couple of late teen kids who had NO IDEA what a 45rpm record was......and I was holding one at the time. :o

I have had much the same fun showing 8" floppy disks to CIS101 students and getting totally blank expressions when I try to explain that at one point a bank of these was state of the art for mass storage.

Now that's a stupid question; Bakelite would have shattered. As much as I like state-of-the-art gear, the cylinder <i>obviously</i> had to be made of wax.

I'm still waiting for them to come out with 2 1/4" disks. It's the next logical step. Damn the industry standards, progress isn't progressing fast enough!

Oh, the cotton light bulbs. . .

Actually not so stupid......I just wanted to see if you knew the answer and you did much to my great enjoyment. No offence, insult or "mousetrap" was intended. It's just that I've run into so many individuals on forums that "talk the talk" but in actuality haven't got the first clue concerning what they're talking about that every so often I toss little gems like this out to see what responses come back. You'd actually be stunned to know the number of people who would have said "Bakelite". :o Or even more scarey would believe that you could flatten a cylinder out and make a playable LP from it. :-?

Anyway.....I am glad to meet you and welcome to our cozy little asylum.

Making LP's out of vinyl was a bad idea... That soft plastic wore out too quickly, and I even found bubbles in some of mine. You can spray them with furniture polish and rub them down before playing though, that helps 'em last longer. Or you can record them onto CD's and drive down the road with your car stereo going hisssPOP-hisssPOP-hisssPOP. Next, I'll have to copy my old 8-tracks... The Simon and Garfunkle one for sure.
The only 78's I have are some morse code training records. Is that the right way to push your code speed up, or WHAT!??

Now to figure out how many kilobytes of data storage would fit on a stereo LP. Hmmm... :o

OK - thanks a lot for the history lesson, you two. :P Since I am not a smoker, I was forced to look up Bakelite to refresh my memory as to its composition and uses. Very educational - and one more useful fact has pushed its way out of my brain, never to return...
When trouble arises and things look bad, there's always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is insane.

Lemme shove another useful fact outta there an' replace it with this: Bakelite was also used in making the shells for the main body and handset for old style rotary telephones.......as well as ashtrays. :P

Yeah, those I remember also. Man, I am really showing my advanced age.
Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye...... Mr. President.
