You know, the thing when a full-grown woman makes a sound like an overstressed steam boiler? When you're certain somebody's just pulled a knife on her, so you whip around to see how you might help - and there she is being all happy?
Considering how sensitive canine ears are... ouch!

Good evening.
What I want to know is why don't THEIR ears hurt when they do that...

Probably for the same reason people tend to not notice their own body odor... 8)

Maybe the sound pressure is the same on both sides of their eardrums. That would explain why groups of women tend to "EEEEEEE" at the same moment. The only defense against an external "EEEEEEEE" is an equal and opposite internal one?

For this, I rely on my Gen Psych text. As a note, the human ear "can hear a ticking watch under quiet conditions." So why isn't this true always? other then simple noise pollution, the answer is, we adjust to the noise level.
"If you were to hear a loud tone over and over again, eventually it would begin to sound softer." This is known as "Sensory Adaptation." So, in short, they simply know its coming and can adjust.
I love Psych.

Maybe women have ears like a bat does. When a bat chirps for echolocation it is so loud that it would damage its' own hearing. So there are muscles in its ears that disconnect the little bones that transfer sound to the inner ear. So for a brief period of time while it chirps it is deaf. So maybe when women 'EEEEEEE' their ears disconnect to save themselves. Unfortunately that doesn't help the rest of us.
BTW: I think that Bo sould be afraid. He should be very afraid...

Hey, the only thing one CAN do in that case is the cotton method. At least my boy was smart enough to come prepaired for that
