12-31 strip is crap. Totally.
12-31 strip is crap. Totally.
The 12-31 Nip n' Tuck strip was a new low, Ralph.
It was nothing but far-right spin on a republican who made himself look absolutely stupid.
As for Patty Murray, here's an article about the admittedly dumb things she said about Osama Bin Laden:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/ar ... Dec24.html
Yet where is the "outrage" about the far worse antics of a republican congressman, Dana Rohrabacher?
http://www.ocweekly.com/ink/03/01/cover-moxley.php
As to Trent Lott, this is what the typical right-ring commentary is:
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/artic ... E_ID=30184
"When Strom Thurmond went up against Harry S. Truman and Thomas E. Dewey in 1948, it was about states' rights. Dixiecrats was the derogatory name the Media Ministry gave to what was really the States Rights Democratic Party."
"It was about state's rights??!!??"
Here's the Mississippi 1948 "state's rights" ballot:
http://mshistory.k12.ms.us/features/fea ... allot.html
"A vote for Truman electors is a direct order to our Congressmen and Senators from Mississippi to vote for passage Truman's so-called civil-rights program in the next Congress. This means the vicious FEPC --- anti-poll tax, anti-lynching and anti-segregation proposals will become the law of the land and our way of life in the South will be gone forever."
But let's hear from the centarian himself, ol' Strom, on Truman's proposals to end segregation and lynching:
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/strom1.html
"These uncalled for, and damnable proposals...."
Vacant Lott's comment at his birthday that "it would have been better if he won in 1948," shows one of two things:
Either Lott was simply being a blithering idiot, or he approved of the racist 1948 Dixiecrat plank.

Actually, let's go one better. So what if he's a bigot? So what? Point to legislation or agenda where such a thing matters. Nixon was an avowed racist, yet when it came down to signing legislation strengthening the agenda of equal rights he signed them. When it came right down to it, Nixon realized they were first and foremost American citizens. His words were even captured on a personal recorder which is part of his presidential archives "... I must do what is right by them...".
If it wasn't for a statement made at a birthday bash for a send off of someone who lived the first sixty years of their life with clear cut racism and segregation ruling the land, what would there be to say about Lott? Nothing? How about asking his own constituents, the people he represents, what they think? Funny, they rallied around him, and not just the anglos.
If Lott is truly a segregationist racist then he has been damn good at keeping it to himself and not letting it interfere with his job in the country's legislature. He introduced no law supporting the case of segregation nor has he stumped on the floor of the senate a plan which was originated in legally favoring one race over another. If Lott is an archtypical racist, we could hope that most racists are just like him - carrying their prejudice in their heart but noy letting it rule their actions.
The Democratic party has been very quiet about this matter. I'm willing to call it discretion on their part and worthy of a nod. The loudest have been pundits and those citizens particularly embittered by the results of the last two elections.; finally they have something to latch a hold of and rail loud and long to anybody who'd listen. *shrug*
But I do agree with one thing, Ralph probably should not have put that strip in the regular N&T line-up. Too topical and dated of a subject for it to be of any relevance by this time next year. I can picture it now as someone else is reading through the N&T archive in 2004 finding this particular strip and thinking to themself "what? I don't get it." I'm not saying he should not have made the strip but he should've put it in a special archive or run it as a second strip for the regular piece. It is much the same way with the comic strip featuring the tribute to ... um, that race car driver who died. It's nice and all but it generally means nothing to those people who don't follow car racing. However, it is Ralph's comic and as comics like these represent less than 2% of the whole of his work I think all of us can take a deep breath and relax.

Lott
Well, based on past statements and actions, it's most likely a good bet that Lott is not racist.
Also, it's worth noting that the ones who "did him in" were not "the liberals."
It was conservatives.
Even Rush Limbaugh and the "Freepers" were saying Lott should be out.
As Ralph stated elsewhere, Lott is a schmuck.
His past record of stupid statements, hypocrisy, and pork-barrel back-room budget deals, not to mention his ham-handed dealings with senate GOP moderates are pretty much what cost the GOP the senate in 2001.
So far, this Frist fellow who looks like he'll be the senate leader looks like he know's what he'll be doing.
And the only "dirt" anyone has thrown at him are some shady finances in a medical company that look like Frist had nothing to do with, but Frist did own stock in the company.
However......
I am PO'd at Frist over one thing he did when he was much younger.
He would "adopt" cats from local shelters, then practise surgery on them until they died.
However Frist has apologized for this, and donated a lot of money to no-kill shelters.
(As you can guess, I'm a cat lover.)
So it looks like the senate is in better hands now, perhaps some real work will be done.
Like repealing the "Patriot" act.

Republicans, democrats, conservatives, liberals, it just doesn't matter!
Let's be frank people, politics has always, and ever will be, about one thing: telling people what they want to hear instead of telling them the truth.
Granted, telling the American people the truth isn't always a good thing. Some of the so-called "citizens" in the 60's might have leaked the information to the communists if the government had said what was really at Area 51. That might not have been the case, but the military didn't take that chance.
Back to politics: the only reason Christians like myself support Republicans in general is because they tend to support our side of certain issues more often than the democrats. Unfortunately, we don't like everything they do. Sometimes they vote on an issue in a way we don't agree with, but that happens a lot less often than when the democrats vote.
In the end, though, everyone can vote the way they want to. If the American people want our society to slip into oblivion, the only thing the rest of us can do is pray and stock up on ammunition.
Provided there isn't a law against gun ownership, and that still wouldn't stop people like Ralph, now would it?

Tho' some Republicans have a distressing tendency to act as if what they percieve as good, Christian morals should mandatory and enforced by law, whether we like it or not. Case in point, any number of states that have laws dictating what a lawfully married couple may and may not do in the privacy of their own bedroom...Strange_Wulf wrote:Back to politics: the only reason Christians like myself support Republicans in general is because they tend to support our side of certain issues more often than the democrats.

To me, the government, state or federal, is over-stepping its bounds there. God has made it a law to refrain from all sexual immorality. If it's a husband and wife, I don't really know if any "positions" are immoral. There are people who are way more qualified than me to tell you about such things (not Dr. Ruth
).
However, I do believe that some of the things couples do in the bedroom will not help the marriage. After all, it's about a lot more than just sex, though that is an integral part of it. Of course, I also believe the government has no right to tell them what to do in such situations. I say as long as it doesn't disturb the neighbors and is kept private, the only "positions" you should refrain from are those your pastor/preacher warns against. And the government should have no say in the matter.
Now, if they do something wild in the middle of the street in broad daylight...
*visualizes it*
Oy! That'd be grounds for some jail time, or at least a very heavy fine.
Hoo boy; don't mind me, I'm just sleep deprived.
Good night!
*wanders off to stumble into bed*
