Rhyme and reason
See what I mean about how to tell when a cat's P.O.ed? (see UTLT)
The strip has inspired me to poetry. Ergo, this shall be poetic justice.
See the kitty twitch her tail?
She's gonna make that Charlie wail.
Nip's got her in his master plan,
to take that bragging nusance and,
With a former roomie and one other,
make Charlie cry out for his mother.

poor charlie...he's about to learn a very important life lesson: karma wears large, waffle-soled boots with steel toes. angry kitties, angry females, resentful former roommates, and sleep-deprived country boys. the possibilities boggle the mind.

tell-tale tails tells tales.
That's ok Mr. Overlord Maam Sir. Not everybody looks good wearing a tail, and sometimes they get in the way, and some of them aren't much more than a bull's-eye for a boot.
Now saying what you did with a mouth full of nice sharp white teeth, that has more of an effect on people. Not as direct as a morning-star to the noggin, but it does have its merits.

Asking people to repeat themselves is good in another way too - you may sometime actually misunderstood an innocent comment. In one case, I remarked to a female coworker (admiringly) that she'd chosen a line of work (secretary) she could do anywhere, while mine kept me stuck to broadcast engineering. She said nothing at all in reply, but later went to her supervisor and told him I'd told her that *ANYONE could do her job*
Her supervisor went up the ladder, and from there the s**t rolled downhill onto me.
I was lucky to keep my job.
It would have been nice, had she asked me to repeat myself - unless she insisted upon misunderstanding me twice. There are people like that...

Little Ms. Vindictive, wasn't she? Instead of taking her anger to task with you (you were obviously talking with her), she decided to get you in trouble instead and exercise power over you. It wasn't like you deprived her of her sleep, spread vile rumors about her, drove her nuts, broker her heart or sexually harrassed her, right?
I wonder if the next installment of N&T will be a big diagram like one of those "better mouse-trap" things which were seen in the old Tom & Jerry cartoons or in more recent comics.

uh, hey, andrick...you forgot something. in addition to being vindictive, add 'insecure' and 'paranoid.' she likely got upset because, well, anyone could do her job. i temped for two years, and in all that time i only found two jobs i couldn't step in and do just as well as the person doing it, or better. it's not ego or arrogance, just that most administrative jobs can be done by anyone willing to work hard, regardless of skill set. mayhap the lady in question felt a little replaceable.
don't blame her, though, for not talking to UM about it. i've gone through any number of stupid 'conflict resolution workshops' and way too many of them say it's better to escalate a matter than to 'risk further antagonism by trying to clear up the matter with the offender.' she's a product of a stupid system that teaches people it's much better to let your supervisor resolve anything than to take a little freaking initiative and try to clear up a misunderstanding. let's all run to teacher when the boys pull our hair, now...
peace out,

Oh yeah, bring on the Rube Goldberg device!
I just hope their master plan involves a machine with at least fifteen points of action- and fifteen different kinds of humilation for Charlie.

Thanks for helping me see her possible point of view more clearly. I am somewhat less mystified now.Random George wrote:uh, hey, andrick...you forgot something. in addition to being vindictive, add 'insecure' and 'paranoid.' she likely got upset because, well, anyone could do her job. i temped for two years, and in all that time i only found two jobs i couldn't step in and do just as well as the person doing it, or better. it's not ego or arrogance, just that most administrative jobs can be done by anyone willing to work hard, regardless of skill set. mayhap the lady in question felt a little replaceable.

I have learned a certain sort of patience with my co-workers anyway, since out of any large group it is inevitable that one or two will be unfriendly. I've found that the worst of those seem to leave our workplace within a year or two. I've been there for nearly 20 years.

yah...people get funny. i went on a weeklong assignment once. my agency 'handler' said the person who was out (jury duty) had been assigned there as a temp once and in less than a week had replaced the person she was filling in for. she sabotaged my job by mixing up the tags on the phone, telling people that she'd been told by my 'handler' that 'the girl coming in was the only person who could take the assignment on short notice and was not exactly the best and the brightest, and if someone more qualified and professional became available they would get a replacement' and leaving me a botched set of instructions for the mail protocol that had me routing things all wrong. after these misunderstandings were cleared up, they offered me her job at the end of the week. i wouldn't take a job with a company that would replace people that easily, so i told them to talk to the handler about it, and she made nice with the excuses for me. but she was so afraid of them seeing that she wasn't irreplaceable that she almost lost her own job over it.

To be bluntly honest, she should have been fired over it. Deliberately sabotaging the company by deception, vandalism, and outright lies. I do not think that I would want anyone around who would such things.
Moreover,
If this is how she acts when she has to be away from work, what is she like when she is on the job?
How quickly was her mischief undone is what I am wondering?

eh. took me a day and a half to clear it all up. i ask a lot of questions when i'm just starting things, and when stuff doesn't add up i tend to go sit on someone till i get answers. that's why they offered me her job. several other temps had come in, and been so lost (i was temping because i needed job flexibility; many people temp because they're not really qualified for a full-time job) that when she came back they were desperate for 'someone who knew how things should go.' they figured if i could come in and do it, i must be this amazing office goddess. i didn't tell them it was sabotage, because i wasn't really sure until my very last day when the vp told me 'we're really glad you could take the job on such short notice, and i'm going to call your service personally and tell them they've undervalued you.' at me perplexity, he explained what had been said, and i just told him, 'oh, sir, you don't need to do that. they'll send you an evaluation form, and that's really the best way to give them feedback because it goes into my permanent file.' he sent back my form with perfect scores, and a rave review at the bottom. boosted my pay rate fifty cents an hour. karma happens. the sabotage only hurt her in the long run, and she either stopped it after or didn't stay long. i left her a note that said, 'gosh, i'm sure you're just used to it by now, but you may want to let people know when they fill in for you that the transfer and voicemail labels are mixed up, and you may want to revise your mail procedure notes. i know when you do something every day you don't always think about the little details, but there are a couple of things it took me a bit to figure out. luckily, greg (the vp) was able to clear them up for me.' translation: i'm wise to you, greg saw your jacked up procedure, i didn't rat you out, and you'd better not pull this again. i believe in giving people a chance to come clean and fly right.

Uh... The JAM? Isn't that why someone decided to put "X"'s into written missives for, as a long distance smooch? We've progressed a long way since then and now have smilies to do that such as:
