I figure that with the commotion now it will take a while for anyone to notice Lauril, and it's definitely going to take her a while to come back out of hiding on her own. So I'm hoping to leave her there, at least for most of tomorrow - the RL reason for this is that I have family visiting tomorrow, and I'm not sure when I'm going to have a chance to post.

If I'm figuring wrong, though, I'll just do what I can to catch up.

WHOA! Just checked the RP thread this morning and wow... did I have a lot of reading to catch up on. As this is my first time on an RP thread, is is common to feel this overwhelmed? :)

I've been trying to post twice a day, but even with that it looks like the action took off without me. I feel like Omega's been standing frozen in time with his laspistol aimed at Sharuuk for about ten minutes straight! Do I need to post more often?

That's essentially what happened to me earlier. I leave for an evening, and when I come back everything in the world has happened! I'm not sure what can be done about that, though it seems (for whole two evenings running) that people have been posting in the evenings... at least, it's evening where I live.

Well, I don't know much about RP threads, but it seems that the problem is that some of us are going to be able to post more than others, so... I don't know how you fix that, but I don't want those who can't post as much to always feel like they're being left behind.

Should we suggest a certain number of posts per day or maybe a limit on how much action a post can contain? I don't know... I defer to someone with more posting experience than me.

How do other RP's deal with this situation? I'd rather not have constant retconning because that can really get confusing.

Well for those who are a little puzzled about Sebastis' behavior. I will clue you in on a few things. Strictly player knowledge.

Her Father was a Alexander the Great/Sadam like conquer from another planet who came here in the ancient past and took over the planet. This was the last straw for her and she decied to lead a revolt against her father. She didn't want to see another world inslaved.

She lead a group of loyal followers in a very greusome bloody battle (All most the equvilent of Vietnam). She lost alot of friends. Needless to say they failed. He followers were bruttaly murdered while she was force to watch, and then she was sentenced to a fate worse than death. She was placed in the stasis chamber so that she would be dead to this world and the next too. The worst cruelty of it all is that all she knew and loved is gone. She is in a world she doesn't know or really understand.

She is also suffering from post battle syndrom. That is why she freaked out.

Basically there needs to be a minimum/maximum schedule set.

Some RPs do it by asking participants to not post until everyone's had a turn. (Lowest Common Denominator method.)

Some then add a rule that you have a limited amount of time (like 24 hours or so) to post before you can be considered to have "missed".

A few settle into something like a chat, where the fast posters hold one conversation, slow posters another.

I have no problems with that. Do to certain situations at the moment, I might be able to post a lot on certain days, but on other days I'll be out of the loop for an extended period. If/when that happens I'll give everybody the heads-up so they can know to ignore me.

To all,
Sorry for not playing along but I got REAL busy the past week and there's no sign of any rest for the wicked anytime soon.

"Grumpy's" full backstory is he's prior military who used to work aerospace R/D at the "new" area 51 (original location was too well known). Not the warrior type, but considers Macgyver his patron saint and can jury rig an effective weapon or vehicle out off almost anything. He's also familiar with most alien technology and the more common races, but forbidden to openly talk of it.

Got out due to hypertension from too much action, and moved home to the city. Shortly discovered the city was also too stressful for him, so he moved out to the country even though he doesn't know the first thing about rural living.

He opened the appliance repair shop with the intention of earning a quiet, honest living, but apparently that kind of thing doesn't happen in Malarky County! (at least the quiet part). He still has lots of contacts and experience, but no special equipment other than what you'd find in any other repair shop. He'd be more than happy to fix someone's "exotic" stuff, but does not have the gear or parts.

I would very much like to continue to run with this, but for now I'll have to stick my character back in his workshop, settling in and doing whatever odd jobs come along until I get more free time to get more actively involved.

I kinda like the LCD method so everyone can have a chance to post, but to do that I think we'd need to take a head count and see who's still with us. Plus, we'd have to establish a given time so that if someone misses, we can still proceed with the story.

What would everyone say to the LCD method (see Earl's previous post)? Once you've posted, you need to wait until everyone else has had a turn, then it's okay to post again. If someone hasn't posted an entire day, then it's okay for everyone to proceed without them (unless they've given previous notice that they will be out).

Let's hear what everyone thinks of this. If you're cool with the idea, say so, if not, let us know. This'll also be good to give us our head count.

(I'm going to refrain from posting again today so we can see where everybody stands. Besides, I want to give everybody else a chance to catch up.
:) )

I like it. I'm also thinking if that person has nothing to say, they should post something in this thread so the next person can go sooner.

The LCD method works for me, perhaps with a smattering of conversationalists as long as they don't move too far away from the party. This is an awfully huge party:

Did I miss anyone?

That's 12 folks! So if everyone posted twice in a day, that would be 24 posts (!!!)

Guess it would explain how we got to page 7 on introductions alone! =^^=

By the way, who is in charge of the plot? Or is there going to be a plot? I see a few options in the making...

I'll try to keep up and go with the flow for now.

Let's do LCD. It might slow the RP down a lot, but maybe it'll be more manageable.

Or we could "split" the thread according to similar storylines, and keep the groups smaller for more control.

When I've done this before, we had a designated "moderator" who, although participating in the story, resolved plot problems and mediated player disputes. Would someone offer to volunteer? (Not me please!)

Count me as inactive reserve for now due to my schedule, sorry but I can't help with moderating. :(

Feel free to use "Grumpy's appliance and electronic repair" for generic backstory support if needed, e.g. getting a second hand tv cheap or getting an old one fixed

I agree about LCD but am slightly hesitant on separate threads. Eventually the threads could be so tightly interwoven that a conversation started in one thread might continued on BOTH threads.

But since I don't have a better idea, I'll be quiet now. I'm thinking those with more online RP'ing experience will have a solution and we'll go with that.

I'll go with whatever everyone else decides.

I also think it's probably only fair to bring up again the fact that I'm only going to be around for... wow - it's only the next two weeks, now. I joined in because I've been wanting to join some RP for a while now, but I'm going out of town on the 17th (which means I'll probably need to bow out a little before that), and I won't be back until the end of August (though I might be able to join back in once I get back, depending on where the story is and how school seems to be going). This is why I've used a character who's specifically on her way somewhere rather than being free to stick around right now. I figured she could get to know everyone a little now, and then come back after she's done with her road trip (and I'm done with my RL trip).

(BTW, I'm working on posting, and then I think we'll have a stretch in which everyone except Kerry has posted.)

Edit:
I wouldn't normally do this, of course, but I must dedicate my last post to my sister and my mom:
To my sister, because last night when I described a (much-condensed) version of the events of the thread so far and asked, "How would you respond," she answered, "Mom's gonna kill me!" Hence the statement in my post.
And then to my mom, because when I described the events to her, ending with, "and I end up having lunch with a bunch of strange creatures in a diner. What would you do?" she answered, "Invite the strange creatures to spend the night?"

And because I found both very amusing, you get to hear about them.

PLEASE READ THIS POSTING

Well, I'll volunteer to be moderator unless someone else feels like they would do a better job. After all, this is my first time on an RP thread. Mind you, I'm not all that green, I have about 20+ years of Dungeon Mastering experience, so I'll just try to apply what I know of that to what we're doing here.

As for driving the plot, I think everybody's doing a fine job just providing what they have so far, so I wouldn't want to tamper with that. One thing I might suggest, though, is that since we're all a bit hampered by not being able to control each other's characters and I certainly don't want to be some kind of "you succeed"/"you fail" arbitrator, I think if there is something you are wanting to do that would affect another character in a big way, etc. you should send that character a private message and work out some details so everything will run smoother in the RP thread itself.

Thankfully, Tbolt has been gracious enough to compile a list of players for us and I will repost it here:

BrockthePaine
Earl McClaw
Fusion
Grumpywolfhound
Ironfox
Kerry Skydancer
Sebastis
Sharuuk
SpacewolfOmega
Tbolt
The JAM
Wayfarer

I propose that beginning at 9:00 a.m. EST on June 4th, 2006 that everyone be allowed to post. Once you have posted, you should not post again until either everyone has posted, or it is 9:00 a.m. EST on the following day. (I hope Eastern Standard Time will not be a problem for anyone, but since I'm volunteering to moderate, I need a time zone I'm familiar with! :) )

If everyone has posted before 9:00 a.m. EST the following day, you may post another reply... however, you may not post another reply after that until everyone has made their second reply, too. I hope this makes sense. (Example: You post at 9:30 a.m. on day 1... you check back by 6:00 p.m. that same day and everyone has replied. You post your second reply for the day... you may not post again until either everyone has made their second reply or it is 9:00 a.m. on day 2.)

At 9:00 a.m. EST each day... seven days a week... *gulp* I will make a list of everyone's status on this thread. It will show who is registered in the RP (right now everyone on the list Tbolt compiled is considered registered), their status (active/inactive), etc. This will help you get your "quick view" to see where we're at. Please check this thread before you post on the RP thread.

That being said, please send me a private message if you need to be absent from the game so I can mark you as inactive for that period of time, allowing other players to know you have skipped your posts for that day.

Also, there may be a rare occasion or two where I may be unable to perform my moderator duties for the day. In this case, if my wife is unable to cover for me, I may need someone to act as a substitute. If this is to happen, I will give prior notice on this thread so a volunteer can bravely step forward and I'll send all the necessary info I can so they can carry out the daily status post.

I'll try and do a follow-up post around 9:00 p.m. EST each day just so everyone can see who has replied already, etc. I'll try and put what details I can into these reports.

If this sounds good to everyone, we'll proceed with this plan. If there's a problem, speak up... we want everybody to be onboard for this. :)

Since there's not really much to post for the first RP DAILY STATUS REPORT I'll go ahead and post it now. I'll repost the STATUS REPORT AGAIN at 9:00 p.m. EST on June 4th, 2006.

(Pray for me... what have I just gotten myself into? )
