Yeah, I know those Mayfair crayon train games are popular... to me, they take way too long for the high amount of luck in them.
I'm still bitter from a game of Iron Dragon where I spent like 15 turns hauling some load across the map and then a random event destroyed it. Meanwhile someone else dropped off a load worth $50 (out of the $250 needed to win), drew another contract card, and gee what good luck, the city they just delivered to wants a second one of that cargo for another $50! Blah. I swear I TRIED to like Iron Dragon... I mean, Tom Wham designed it for Pete's sake! I wanted to like it...
For train games, I like 18xx (I programmed the SimTex version of Avalon Hill's 1830), Dampfross, Trainsport Austria, Streetcar, Stephensons Rocket, ... ah, there are so many.
thanks,
russ

Only play 18xx type games aout 3 times, and never fnished one...they seemed to take too long. Be willing to give them another shot, but would have to find people that have the gaem...it's harder, I've found, to find board game players than rpgers or mini-gamers.

18xx do take longer, that's true. (They go quicker as the players get more experienced.) Playing 1830 on the computer only takes an hour... For an sf twist, there's 2038 (trains in space!), but it takes even longer.
Check out Trainsport Austria (Winsome Games), it's only an hour, and a pretty neat system that includes some luck -- I know some folks don't like that 18xx is purely deterministic. Like the Mayfair games, each player is a railroad.
Stephensons Rocket is a great new German game (by Reiner Knizia) which is pure deterministic, but doesn't feel that way. Like the 18xx games, each player is an investor owning stock in various railroads. It too only takes an hour or so (first game will probably take longer as you get used to it).

------------------
