Here's two copies of a panel from a forthcoming ROCR story. One is a gif, the other a PNG. Can you see them both? Do they look the same?

Drat. In Netscape 4.7 for Linux, the transparent PNG doesn't work - at least not for me.
------------------

Staroffice 5.1 can show the transparency, but not too well. Hmmm. Then again, it hardly counts as a web browser.
------------------

Statically linked Opera 5 for Linux doesn't show the transparent png - but maybe it does use a lower-lever OS library for showing pngs that I must replace. (It's statically linked to QT which probably doesn't have anything to do with image rendering)
Nice to have OPera for Linux again though. And it's improved!
------------------

Yours doesn't look too bad either, Kathryn!
I'm now at my parents' house where I've installed Mozilla 0.8 and Opera 5.02 for Windows on their spanking new computer. The PNG image looks fine on both.
------------------

The top picture doesn't have a transparent windows. The bottom one does. (What's so special about transparent windows anyway? It sounds so obvious I can't believe everybody else isn't already doing it.)
I'm using netscape 4.76 on Solaris.

My graphics program shows a marked increase in file size vs.a JPG (3.5x), so I don't think I'll be switching any time soon...
