It is my ultimate goal to get spotted as well so I found this post to be very informative. Thanks for sharing it, Reinder. I wish you all the best in your plans to get spotted.
BTW, have you already sent KS an email asking to be accepted into Keenspot? And have they responded to it at all?
------------------

Well, apparently my name had been circulated after the last time I applied, but no response.
This is to be expected by the way. They only contact you to invite you.
Keenspot isn't my ultimate goal, by the way, just the next step towards professionalisation. I know through Carson and Maritza's comments that you haven't arrived just because you're on the Spot.
------------------

I don't know Reinder, I think that of the problems that Chris sited about John's strip the only one you share is readership.
Your artwork is beautiful, your writing skills are great, you update regularly. Those, from my reading were the ones that concerned Chris the most. And if the genre was a key problem then I doubt that Carson would be on the spot or as popular as he is.
------------------

What are the main advantages of Keenspot anyway? Do you get paid? Or do you just end up on a more reliable server?
------------------

1. Yes, but not very much. I think most of the Spotters make less than $100 a month from ad revenue
2. Yes, usually the Spot server is more reliable and gets priority in case of problems.
But also, you get more cross-promotion and outside promotion, and some comics are now published in print through Keenspot's print division.
------------------

Hmm... Maybe I should rephrase my statement. It's not my ultimate goal but is definitely one of my dream goals.
And yes, I want to be in KSpot for the reasons Reinder mentioned.
I forgot to ask earlier but why did you (Reinder) think that you don't have a chance of being spotted?
------------------

Because many of the same problems that Chris has with Sporkman, one of the Big Four will have with ROCR. I haven't built much more of an audience than Trout, I work in a genre that turns people off, I make a comic that is a bit eccentric, etc. There'll always be one for whom these problems are big enough for him/her to veto it.
------------------

I had an interesting IRC conversation with John Troutman of Sporkman and Ian J of RPG World (among others). Trout pointed me to a comment in his Livejournal explaining why he hasn't been made a Keenspot. It's informative and tells me that I, likewise, have little or no hope in this area.
Ian J said he didn't know why he was picked, and couldn't get to his usage statistics at the time. Sporkman and ROCR have roughly the same size of readership - I've got a few more right now thanks to the Elf Life blog, but not enough to make a difference except to my bloated ego.
So:
1. build readership
2. get universal appeal.
I'm on it, Chris.
------------------
