Good vs. Evil

Postby Zina on Tue Jan 08, 2002 3:41 am

I have a somewhat taoist opinion on 'good' and 'evil'. Good cannot exist with evil and visa versa. Kinda like a ying and yang. To look at things in a 'good bad' sort of why makes it seem like the world is simply black and white. It's not. It's many shades of grey.
So why do something good? Maybe to get that nice feeling inside when you think 'Hey, I just did something good'? True, it's not as rewarding as cheating on a math test, and maybe that's why not there aren't many 'good' people out there.

It's been quite and I tought of a good subject so etc. etc.
Anyway, thet are lots of people who do good and/or bad things (booth in real life and fiction). I just stopped for a while to wonder, why?
Let's begin with the "bad". Why would someone do someting bad? I realy doubt it would be because "badness" itself. (It still could be.)
Then why? Prehaps cause he/she thinks it is a good thing to do, or just doesn't care about the "badness" but something else he/she gets by the acts.
What about "goodness" then? If noone does anything bad just because it's bad, does someone do something good just because it's good?
An example might clear this thing up a bit. Lets say that there is a wounded man in the gutter and I happen to walk by. I think I would help him (that's a good thing, right), but why?
Because I'm a but of a pessimist, I would say that because if I wouldn't have, I would have felt bad about it. So I didn't do a good thing just because it was a good thing to do, but also to protect myself from unpleasent feelings.
But that's just me. What do you think?

I think bad things are done because of selfishness.
Whatever the bad thing is, the one doing it does it to improve oneselfs situation (get wealth, get rid of competition, to calm envy, make oneself look better to others).
What's missing in this view is most of the time the suffering or pain the committer causes the victim, or maybe he simply doesn't care, as long as he himself is fine.
But I share the oppinion that when you do good things, it's somehow the same. You can't really compare it, cause mostly the good things don't give you any improvement then a mental one. But I think that justifies it enough, when you do good things because you know you would feel bad when you don't, it's not dishonorable.
Achieveing personal satisfaction by helping others is good, isn't it?

I'm a peace loving nut, you could say, and would be perfectly happy without missing something when everyone would be careing and aware of one another, and not intending to hurt his or her with-humans.
I know that's a quite illusionistic dream and very unlikely, but well...

I never claimed my ideas are realistic.

Hmm, well this is an interesting topic. Philosophy and Rambling are both two things i really enjoy a bit so .. be warned this post might be scary to read.. yet it does contain my opinion on the subject ^^.
I don't believe Good and Evil exist, I mean it makes very little sense to me, why people would do things that are evil to be evil.. or good things to be good.. more like excuses or judgements on behavior id assume.
People have their own moral codes.. and beliefs, where they came from? well Locke(the writer not the thief ^^) would say that it would depend on one's education and upbringing that depends on how somone ends up.. as far as personality and character goes. This might or might not be true, yet I would think its definitely plausible at the least, also physical changes to the mind can effect what people do(People with a damaged frontal lobe are often more impulsive and violent than those who have an undamaged one) , as with tons of other things, theres plenty of reasons for behavior. Though itll probally be impossible to track down the exact causes on an individual basis with 100% accuracy. I still dont believe a concept such as Good/Evil can effectively explain people and how they truly act, think or feel. So I wouldn't put much stock in it.., really people are just people and they have reasons for what they do, yet there are so many in number its nearly impossible to keep track of them.
Though given this, the concept of Good and Evil does little to explain why we do the things we do.. so that is why i put little faith in it.. yet then again I have no idea why the world is like it is.. maybe a few half witted theories but eh theories don't tell you much ^^.

Well that actually depends on many different things.
If you ceat, you won't learn and be able to use it later. If you won't nead it later, time used to read for the test is just wasted time.
EVERYTHING is realtive.
PS: sorry it took so long.
PPS: By the way, how often do you check this forum and how well? Just curious.
[This message has been edited by DJ Pirtu (edited 01-15-2002).]

I really have no idea why one would do bad thinks but I do believe that when one is doing a good deed he is actually trying to look better to others (or the mighty above??)

Ocationally, yes. But think about those who do a good deed when there is noone to see it. They might not say a thing later on. What about those?
Well, I guess you could say that they want to be seen as better than others. But only to them selves. I could put it in other words, but can't quite graps it now.

I beleive that people do good things so they can improve themselves inside of that. If you do something good for someone, you get a little ego boost for it, and you feel better for it. However, people do evil things because they Believe they can improve themselves through it. If they put down others, they believe they rise above them all. Also, some people do evil under the allusion of good, and people do good under the allusion of evil. As for the Taoists, I halfway believe in that. Good is merely the absence of evil, and evil the absence of good. It all is based on existence alone. Life is filled with the choices, and living beings decide on those choices, whether good or evil. Now, go ahead and bash my rambling.

The more I have thrown around the consept of "good and bad" in my head, the more I have started to doubt their existance. They were too relative. On the other hand, what isn't? Then I came up with a new teory, that I now have pollished to it's "final" form.

Good and bad are just terms that make more complex matters simple. Behind them are the motives, reactions of society and the person and the question "Who does the deed benify and how?"

Now that I read it through, it doesn't make half as much sense as it did in my head. Hope that made even a slightest bit of sense to you.

love and hate;
do pennys count as fandom?
meaning behind this, nope. all that good and evil are based in is culture and genreal knolage. meat used to be a hates worthy sin, now it not, used to be evil but now good. whats good and whats evil changes with the times, just like the tides.

I don't know about all that but I think that people do bad or evil because it's the easy way out of a situation. If you need money why not steal it and get alot of money at one time other than work for long hours and barely make enough? It's all just a question of selfishness, the consoqences of evil is that you usually end up hurting someone in one way or the other for your own benifet.

It's hard to do the right thing all the time that's why people make up so many excusses to say that what they are doing is okay. I don't think what's considered bad and good are just fads. People know know whats bad when someone is hurt by what they do. ex: child molestaion, stealing, lying.
Something like lying dosen't seem so bad to people but you do end you hurting people with lies you can hurt thier trust.

Anyways that's just my two cents.
