Um, help me out here, why is it cool that I know about Spring Heel Jack? I think I read about him in a horror comic when I was a kid, and I think he was either a "bogey man" of sorts or a real murderer in Victorian England.
Take Care

It's cool because "I was a teenage Fort addict" and read all of the "weird happenings" books I could find. Spring-Heel Jack, the Mad Gasser of Mattoon, the Devil's hoofprints in Devon, the Jersey Devil, lake monsters, rains of fishes and frogs, sasquatch, UFOs, animals found alive embedded in rocks...I devoured that kind of thing.
None of them are really a common knowledge sort of thing, except for the lake monster and sasquatch and UFOs. Spring-Heel Jack is definitely of the less commonly known variety.
jayjay (connoisseur of the weird)
------------------

Ten points for the near-sighted Teddy Bear in the corner! I read a book about him. Talk about truth is stranger than fiction. He inspired Psycho, Leather Face, and Probably Buffalo Bill, but the real Gein was still weirder than all of them combined.
Let me guess you read Chopping Block, right?
Take Care

Heh...a fortean (in the very specific sense) is a fan of Charles Forte, who made a lifelong hobby of collecting "stranger than science"-type tidbits of information and wrote four books about those tidbits.
In a more general sense, it refers to afficionados of the wider genre of "the weird"...like I said before in this thread: cryptozoology, UFOs, rains of fishes or blood or flesh or angel hair, living animals (usually frogs or toads) cut out of a surrounding matrix of unbroken rock, "spook lights", and a whole slew of other paranormal thingies that don't quite rise to the level of demon possession or angelic visitations.
jayjay
------------------

There have appearently been some recent Spring-Heeled Jack attacks in England.
I had once contemplated doing a comic about SHJ along the lines of the "misunderstood superhero" genre.

------------------

What's a fortean?
*is too lazy to whip out the dictionary or go to dictionary.com, even though doing so would probably take up less time than posting here.*

I just wanted to share with you that the word "fortean" was used in the DiscWorld book I"m reading today. I was like "Yayyyy! I know what that means!"

Please tell me you're not serious. . . Some of my loudest laughs have come from the footnotes. Hell, sometimes the footnotes create an on-running joke that won't make sense without them. Whyever do American publishers want to remove them?

DiscWorld Rocks! And I'm lucky enough to have a scifi fantasy bookstore in my neighbourhood that imports the new ones straight from britain.
BTW did you hear that the american publishers have decided to remove the footnotes? It's outrageous, they are some of the best parts of the novels.
