Shooting at Monash University

Just a quick FYI, for all here, There's been a shooting at Monash University, Melbourne (my university). It occured on the 6th floor of the Arts/Humanities building, at around 11:20 local time. I was just heading into the university at the time. Reports say that there are 2 dead, and variable amounts of injured (the popular numbers are 4, 5 or 8 injured). The shooter was apprehended around 12pm or so.

I'm fine, and so are most of my friends. So, things are cool here. But the freaky part is that if I had managed to catch the bus I had intended to catch tonight, I would have been in the building when the shooting had taken place. Had it occured 15 minutes later, I also would likely have been in the building. For about two hours after the event, the mobile phone lines were completely blocked, to the point that I could not even get a message out. I know have three messages on my voicemail, but no way to access them (all my attempts to get a line out chewed up the last of my credits).

So, I'm a little frazzled right now. So's just about everyone in the office I'm using to send this to you guys. What angers a few of us is that it seems that we were left in the dark, if not deliberately, at least because they couldn't bother telling us. Reports were saying it was in the Union building (which frightened me because that's where my girlfriend usually hangs around), that it was a sniper on the roof, plus a few other stories floating around. We had to wait until the newswires had got a hold of the story before we got any concrete details.

So yeah, everyone's fine on this end. Just an FYI for everyone here.

Just about everyone in my homestate, Maryland, is worried about those hit & run guys that shot up the Micheal's in Montgomery County.

I need to watch and/or pay attention to the news more. I didn't even know about the sniper in D.C. until a few days ago.

that always sucks when you don't get told anything. I had just arrived in LAX from Australia in August on the day that that one guy walked in and shot 4 people... right in the floor above customs... so myself and about 500 tired and irratated passengers from different international flights had to sit around for 3 hours and we were told nothing. To make matters worse, half the airport was closed off cause of it and it took me another 2 hours to get to my terminal. I missed my flight but thank god they just popped me on another one.

I mean i can understand that they don't tell the public things to control panic... but being left in the dark just sucks
