A friend has shoved "Akira" in my school bag saying "Dude, you have to watch this!"
My questions to you all, bearing in mind I have a shitload of homework to do over the weekend is: Is the movie decent? Will I suddenly become a drone, surviving on anime alone? Is this a good start to anime movies and such like?<P>------------------

You would have, if you had have answered in time before I got bored with homework and watched it.
As you say, the plot reminded me of the perfect nuclear family suddenly gone post-nuclear in a terrible way, none the less for a 1980's film it rocked! Modern films are just using some of the stuff that Akira used
(Listen to all the groaning and grunting in the backgroud, quite a few new films lately have had similar sounds)
Needless to say "Not now, but soon" and "It has already begun" messed me up.
That and the fact that the fat kid in the floating chair reminded me all too much of Cartman.

<I>Legend of Basara</I> is really good. Here's a link for you to get to know the series a bit ('cuz I'm too lazy to explain <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/biggrin.gif">):<P><A HREF="http://shinbashi.tripod.com/main.html" TARGET=_blank>http://shinbashi.tripod.com/main.html</A><P>Don't worry about spoilers too much, since the makers of the site blank over the spoilers, but if you REALLY want to know, just highlight over it and the text will appear. Still, be wary just in case.<P>It is currently fan-subbed (not released by any North American companies), and most likely you can find it in anime clubs (or the Net; in fact, you can download them from the site I provided <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/biggrin.gif">).<P>I don't know why, but only 13 episodes were made (they cover volumes 1-5 of the manga series, which is just called <I>Basara</I>, by Yumi Tamura). Actually, the old joke in anime circles is that if you ask someone which ones they've seen, and immediately reply "Akira," it's like an alarm going off that the person is an anime newbie.<P>------------------

Evangelion is an incredible series from everything I've heard, and while I've been too lazy and/or conservative with money to pick up the DVDs so far, I will do so in the near future. I have ready access to the whole series DUBBED, but... well, that sort of explains itself.<P>Just for fun, something I found out last semester (although not in so many words): Neo Genesis Evangelion can be roughly translated as "The coming to be of a new good word". (Neo = new. Genesis = coming to be. Evangelion = gospel = good word.) Interesting, no?
