It's good. I'm a big fan of the original too, and I don't have a single complaint about how the characters are portrayed. But just in case you need specifics:
Personalities: Still the same, only more well-rounded. Somebody mentioned that the 2040 characters were like "upgraded" versions of the previous characters, and to a large part that's true. Priss is still the rebellious biker chick we know oh so well, except now she's actually got some justification for that angst and doesn't just come off as a jerk, even though that's how she TRIES to come off. Nene is still very much Nene, and the new hairstyle totally suits her. She's cute, she's enthusiastic, and she can't fight worth a damn. Sylia? Secretive, obsessed, and mysteriously sexy - same old Sylia. She does show a lot more emotion in 2040, but that's in private - none of the other Knight Sabers get to see it. Linna might be the one who underwent the biggest change - she's still the "everygirl", but she's not as greedy or man-obsessed as she used to be. She's still fiercely independent, though, and still retains the enthusiasm of the original Linna.
Relationships: These get changed a little, but not in a bad way. The biggest change is that Linna and Nene are actually sort of friends, as opposed to the constant ribbing Nene endured in the original. Leon still chases hopelessly after Priss, all of the Knight Sabers still wonder what Sylia's up to, Mason is still trying to backstab Quincy. Priss doesn't get along with Nene, but this time it's mostly because she thinks Nene's more of a liability than an asset in battle. Linna sees Priss as almost a mentor (she's new to the Sabers). Daley isn't gay anymore, or at least not as he was in the original, but he and Leon still make the same sort of team. The old character dynamics are still all there.
In summary: watch BGC2040. It rocks.

I love the "Slayer!" "Stryper!" fight in Bastard. Here's how it goes: the evil magician Dark Schneider (our "hero") attacks a priest with a fireball spell ("Slayer!"), which the priest counters with a defensive spell ("Stryper!"). Slayer, of course, is a death metal band, while Stryper is a Christian metal band. Bastard is one of those rare anime where the in-jokes are more likely to be caught by the English-speaking audience rather than the Japanese.
The demon Anthrathrax. Tes.
Evangelion rules. Don't be surprised when the ending throws you completely for a loop though. About half of the people who watched it were utterly disgusted with the conclusion (which prompted the creation of the movie "End of Evangelion" to mollify them), while the other half thought it was brilliant and debate its significance endlessly. It's sort of like The Prisoner that way, or Twin Peaks.
I'd actually seen a lot of anime before Akira. I'd just put it off for a long time, having read the synopsis in the late, lamented Animag (damn you Trish Ledoux for turning to the Dark Side and joining Viz, thus causing the destruction of Animag and the creation of that unholy shitrag Animerica! ). It's pretty cool, although I've seen better.
I've avoided 2040 because I liked the original Bubblegum Crisis so much, and the changes to the characters' personalities and relationships feels like heresy.
Princess Mononoke kicks 100 kinds of ass. See it or die!
Damn, now this thread has reminded me of the summer I spent renting 3 tapes a day at Movie Image, starting out with a tape each of BGC, KOR, and UY TV eps until I'd gone through each series completely. I've got that hollow, nostalgic feeling now. I'm gonna have to rent an old tape of one of those, just so I can see the trailers that AnimEigo used to do.
Oh yeah, and everybody must be sure to watch Otaku no Video. Gainax' finest achievement. And MADOX-01 ain't bad either--fun mecha parody. Vampire Princess Miyu is pretty spooky...
------------------

Oh my GOOOOOD, I was in my local HMV yesterday, and got to see the 2nd half of the Princess Mononoke DVD (dubbed version), and for ONCE I absolutely LOVED the voice acting! There was no bullshit to it, it was amazing! I was gonna ask to change it to the subbed version to make a comparison, but I decided to see it dubbed. For once, I did not cringe to the English voices in anime. And the movie itself was AWE-INSPIRING! GO SEE IT!!!
And also, Jubei-chan and the Secret of the Lovely Eye-Patch. Wonderful OAV series!
