Totally valid. I don't care at all for Fushugi Yuugi or Magic Knights Rayearth. There is a certain line you draw with shouju.
Cowboy Bebop... now I've heard good things about that. Hey Gwalla, do you like Bubblegum Crisis? The old one. I haven't seen 2040 yet.
------------------

At this point, all my favorite anime has been recommended. So I'll offer some further consumption advice, even if it risks upsetting some people...
I thought RANMA 1/2 was really hot stuff as anime, and then finally started reading the original manga... virtually EVERY good idea in the anime is taken from the manga, and the series declines as it begins to fall back on anime cliches.
Lesson I took away from that was: anime is done by studios. Often very GOOD studios, but studios. Yes, there is plenty of truly original anime on the shelves, but... manga is done by ARTISTS, and I think it has more to teach us, as artists.
(I am aware that not EVERYONE on this forum is an artist. At lease, I hope they're not...)

Wait... Gwalla... are you watching the subbed or dubbed Sailor Moon? Cos the dubbed really really REALLY REALLY sux. The subbed has intertwined love stories, campy enemies, Usagi's personal growth... oh well, I guess it's not for everyone.
-Elaine, in Steverino! and in real life.
------------------

well, I've now watched the first 18 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and I have to say that I'm impressed yet again.
Seeing this also made me realize how much Dual! is just a big rip-off of NGE...
Sometyhing else which has really impressed me is His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano)... Wow. I don't knopw if this was manga first, or is original anime, but wow, the symbolics, the use of audio effects and soundtracks, the art, everything!! It's absolutely incredible! It's not anime at all, it's cinematographic art, a masterpiece!! Who'd have thunk that a high school romance series could be so amazing?
...
Cowboy Bebop, huh? I'll have to look for that when I get back in January...
Also, do any of you out there (or your local anime clubs) have any good copies of Excel Saga? It's one of the few series that our club seems to be low on...

Down an unmarked street

Also, "Perfect Blue" is awesome. As is the original OAV series of Tenchi Muyo.
------------------

Trust me on this, Damonk: it doesn't get any better than Escaflowne. It's the top. Aside from having insanely beautiful artwork, it's got a story that ties together seamlessly (if you haven't seen it yet, wait until you see the final episode... unbelievably gorgeous storytelling). Granted, the ending can be a bit of a tearjerker in a way, but... ah, saying more would give it away.
But... Bastard? I'm sorry, I only find it funny while MST3k-ing it.
Other than Escaflowne...

Record of Lodoss War - I've only recently started watching it, but it's nice. Somebody once described it as Western fantasy, Eastern style, which is the truth - and it's great. I like it. It's also only 13 eps long, so it's a quick watch.

Serial Experiments Lain - This series is trippy, but incredibly involving. I've only seen the first two tapes... waiting on Elaine to see the last two. Watch it.

Bubblegum Crisis - What can I say? It's just plain 'ol fun.

Dah! Can't believe I forgot to mention Spriggan! It rules!
AFAIK, the only translated version of Spriggan is a fan sub. I saw it without translation, but it still made sense (you don't need to know what people are saying to understand the MIND BLOWING ACTION!!!)
Better animation than Ghost in the Shell too.
------------------

I'd just like to add that Nightstar (irc.nightstar.net) now has a channel for anime discussions. It's titled (get this) #anime. Everybody's invited!
------------------

okay... latest Damonk Anime update:
I've seen the English dub of Princess Monononononoke (sorry, can't remember how to spell it), and have to say that it was one of the rare instances where the voices were pretty good, if not bang-on great. Mind you, these were "real" actors, some with prior voice acting experience, so I shouldn't be too surprised... Minnie Driver was particularly good, as was the monk guy... As for the movie itself? I really liked it. Damn good stuff.
Conversely, I saw a few episodes of Escaflowne on YTV during the holidays, and find that the subs were much, much better... the English dub voices just do not work for me here.
I have seen two episodes of Excel Saga so far, Ucchan, and I totally loved it! Totally banal, and constantly breaking conventions -- including the 4th wall, it's just the kind of humour that I can really get into... (anybody surprised?)
Sickness pending, I resume my anime club attendance on campus tomorrow -- I'm really looking forward to it. I miss my episodes of Berserk, Lone Hina, and Van Dred... heck, right now, I'd even watch some Amazing Nurse Naneko!
Until next time, keep raving about this wonderful artform which I'm glad to have finally discovered!
