For some reason when I saw the subject of this topic I thought:
"Hmmmm.... So is this a request for advice on how to draw anime to do a tribute to... some comic or other?"
Ah well.
Not sure if its a good or a bad thing that it wasn't. <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/biggrin ... Ok. Need to do a bit of triangulation, choosing stuff that's pivotal and awesome but not yet mentioned; I shoulda come earlier.
Serial Experiments Lain is neat; a friend not-quite-kindly described it as 'weird like Eva, but without the cathartic ass-kicking', or perhaps that was me, but it has some awesome imagery and a neat feel to it.
Tenchi Muyo (at least the initial series) is worth having seen, if only for the costume and spaceship designs, not to mention the architecture; the plot's pretty standard 'boy surrounded by space women who love him for no discernable reason' anime stuff, but for aesthetics and entry-levelness I'd prefer it to Escaflowne. And it isn't uncharming.
Dammit. *Everyone*'s said Eva already. I had a backup third, though, I swear.
Fuck it. Neon Genesis Evangelion: dark and rich like peat--it takes the standard adolescent-kids-power-fantasy and turns up the pressure, turning it into something absolutely the opposite; and the (masterful) violence is all the more cathartic for it.
parthenos's mike

Thought of another one:
Photon! Made by the same people as Tenchi Muyo. It's effin' hilarious!
-Ucchan

Oh, and also, ANYTHING by Yuzo Takada (3x3 Eyes, All-Purpose Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku).
I forget the author's name, but see Video Girl Ai, and DNA2 (as in DNA squared, and it's fansubbed).

ONE more. I can't believe I forgot this:
Rurouni Kenshin. Totally kick-ass-anime! I believe Pioneer brings it out. See the tv show, then the OAV series.
-Ucchan

I wouldn't be surprised if *everything* you all mentioned, plus some of those *rare* ones being talked about on the Avalon board are already in his collection!!
Again~~ thanks, bigtime, everyone!
(even if it means my grades are probably going to suffer becuase of you!)

Bubblegum: It's a bit old for my taste, but some people really dig it.
I second the Kenshin, btw--some of the most intense samurai combat ever, plus the whole east-meets-west charm of the Bakumatsu & early Meiji era. And Saitoh, of course.
mike

Well, I'm off to university to study, and then get my weekly Anime fix!
I have listed off just about everything that has been mentioned up to date, and will be reserving some of them tonight...
Likely, my first choices will be:
-Neon Genesis Evangelion (a popular choice!)
-Patlabor (because I've *always* wanted to see it!!!
and
Photon! (because I'll likely need something "f***in' hilarious" when I get all depressed about how badly my Shakespeare Grad Paper is coming along this week)!!!
Hopefully, that'll be a good start to tide me over for the week...
Thanks again, everyone, for your suggestions, and feel free to keep 'em coming!!

Yes, Monk-chan, those are ALL good! Have fun! Heh, anime is making MY grades suffer too! <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/biggrin ... Personally, I love Bubblegum Crisis, and there is also a newer one called Bubblegum Crisis 2040, with some of the previous characters, and some new ones too.
-Ucchan

BTW forumers, this coming May Toronto is hosting Anime North, an amazing anime convention. This will be it's 5th running in a row (it's an annual anime convention). For anyone interested, here is the website with all of the details:

... and I just now finished watching the 6-part Bastard series, and I loved it, too!
The way that it playfully broke the fourth wall while still keeping itself completely absorbing as a fantasy drama was simply brilliant!
If anything, the only disappointment I suffered from the series is that I felt it wrapped up way too quickly~~ they could have done so much more!!!
Anywho... I'm already out of anime entertainment for the week.
I suppose that's a good thing, though, since it will force me to focus on my studies now...
Oh well! Until Photon, Ranma, and D Tank Police next week!

Sorry for the delay in replying, folks!
Well, Saturday's anime thing was fun as always, and I managed to get all of the Bakuretsu Hunters and the Bastard episodes; I also reserved Photon, Dominion Tank Police, and Ranma 1/2 foir next week. I tried to get Vision of Escaflowne and Neon Genesis Evangelion, but they had already been reserved (D'OH!)...
Man! I just cannot believe how many anime titles that the guy who runs the club has! Everything that you guys mentioned was in his catalogue (a freakin' huge blue binder that weighs a ton!!), with the exception of Kare Kano!
But then again, I haven't checked his "new additions" catalogue yet (a slightly smaller red binder)... Anywho, all I know is that it's a whopping big cornucopia of Anime goodness~~ someone there said that this guy's collection is rumoured to be one of the biggest personal collections in North America! And judging by the catalogue binders, I almost believe this...

Oh, and I have just finished watching the ENTIRE Bakuretsu Hunter series, and I absolutely *LOVED* it!!!
It's hilarious, yet verges on the incredibly deep; it's filled with magic, with cool fight scenes, with wonderfully interesting characters, etc, etc, etc...
The storyline is brilliant~~ the only disappointment comes in the last 10 minutes of the final episode, when things get a little over-sappy for a minute or two... but then it gets back on track and finishes quite nicely...
Has anyone else seen this series out tehre? I'd like to hear your thoughts on it!

Saw an episode, read some of the manga, and it IS a good series! Haven't seen it in a while, though ...
Keep trying for NGE and Vision of Escaflowne. They ARE awesome! And, when you have the time, Rurouni Kenshin.

Well, since I'm not all that big into anime, I don't have any more to add ,
BUT:

quote:
Originally posted by damonk13:

I saw the first episode of The Lodoss War, and wasn't very impressed, however.

That's because it's not very impressive, IMHO. It's every Western fantasy cliche ever conceived, rolled around an incomprehensible plot and spit out at a maddeningly slow pace.
The only good thing I got out of Lodoss was that it led directly to me beginning my own comic. I endured the entire series in two viewings and made sarcastic comments all the way through it, watching my friend Matt (who'd bought it on DVD, no less) get angrier and angrier. I finally realized that I could do that, and if my art wasn't up to it, at least I'd be coherent, which is more than I could say for Lodoss.
I strongly endorse the idea of an anime-tinged Framed! Mecha-Frank?
Oh, and even though I'll only be repeating what others have said, I'll put my two-yen's worth of opinions here.
1 - Ghost in the Shell.
2 - Akira.
3 - (tie) Gundam Wing/Robotech.
Yeah, maybe the last one dates me, but the giant battling robots were COOL!
------------------

Wahaha! Seriously demented stuff here folks!
Judging by the strip, you might like 'Jungle De Ikou'- most assuredly not 'nipple free' heh heh. Geeez.. I think I laughed so hard I gave myself a hernia just now.
I'm also quite fond of the slayers (and im sure i'll like its various sequel series' as well!)
As you guys said Gundam Wing was paradied and such, i admit you have a point, and also its one of the most way serious series', id check it out anyway.
Later i'd check out Project A-ko.. I hear the sequels arent as good as the original.. When i got the thing it was my fave for quite awhile..
Vision of Escaflowne I think i saw a few eps on the tube as 'escaflowne' but its been cancelled i believe. I hear it was heavily edited, but it was still an excellent show from what I saw. Tv producers.. do you have to be an imbecile to get the job, or does it just help?
------------------
