So apparently the siteadmin isn't updating...

I don't suppose there's another way to update your site without, having to force a full update via siteadmin? Because that would be wonderful.
Haven't had a new comic since Last Monday...my hits are declining fast...same old story that everyone else has currently.
I even had a brand new spankin' site design ready to whip out last night, and lo and behold siteadmin is updating incredibly slow...damn.
Does anyone, anywhere, have any idea of how long it should take to return to normal? Thanks in advance.

The mods are keeping hush hush. That one announcement still says everything is working normal when clearly it isn't . I don't know how to load without Autokeen, but are you saying a Full update might work?

Noooooooooooo....don't touch that full update button; full updates are processor-intensive and entirely unnecessary 99.9% of the time.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see that there is another thread for this, I'll go there.

If you're brave you can edit the public index file to let your readers know the situation, and to point them to an alternate source for the new comics.

Or if you have a saybox or blog or message board, those are great for pointing the angry mobs and their various sharp and burning implements elsewhere.

I do have a news box, and I did explain what was going on and even posted an external photobucket link to the new comic, however that feels very cheap and unprofessional.

Yeah, I did that at first too, and felt the same way. Then I created a nicer display page that matches my comic's site and put that up on my other website, with an obvious link to it at the top of the comic's main page. I'm sure there must be places that offer free websites with limited space if you don't have your own already.

I threw together a temporary, alternate site for my comic, and (seeing as I'm of the brave ilk) I've tried to edit my public index file to point folks to said alternate site. Every time I go to save the changes, though, I get a permission error. Is there a way to edit index.html that I'm not aware of?

I went and checked out the manual update option earlier, but I noticed that 1.) my comic for today had already qued up as part of an automatic regular update and 2.) there were around 8000-something ques in line ahead of me. I checked again recently, and it's down to 6000-something. So apparently it's working, just slowly. Don't actually know anything, though.

I can't help thinking it's almost an annual occurrence. Very odd! I has no site now! (I think I'll use this opportunity to replenish my buffer.)

Well, I don't know what you do, and how different it is from Mac to PC, but this is how I do it. Open your site's main page and view the source, copy it and paste into a new file in textedit (plain text format) (Notepad on a PC I guess). Edit what you want to. Save it somewhere on your computer as index.html Go to the public folder on your FTP for your site. Upload the new file, and tell it to replace the old one when it asks. I use Cyberduck.

I take offence to that. Nobody is deliberately withholding information form the people here at CG. Any time news comes to hand, it is immediately disseminated. The reason no news is forthcoming is that there is no new news to share.
The unfortunate truth is that with the CG setup, there are only two people who know what is going on in the backend - Kisai and STrRedWolf. They are also the only ones who have the ability to fix it. Usually it works out that there are few updates from them about the problem because they are busy fixing the problem. Hopefully, many of these issues will be resolved when the new AutoGenesis comes out.

Wait, are you saying that you force a full update
every time you want to update your comic???
Please, please, please - do not force manual updates, let alone full updates unless you are doing something major (like a complete site re-build). The server will attempt to update your comic automatically once every 24 hours, 365 days a year. Triggering manual updates places extra strain on the server.

On some accounts, editing files in public_html is enabled. On some accounts, it isn't and you get "permission denied" errors. I think the difference is age of accounts. Older accounts that were created on the old Butch server seem to have permission to edit their public_html files, while newer accounts created on Cecilia don't have permission. This is probably due to the configuration of the servers. As far as I know, it can't be changed.
The simplest way to be able to update the index when the server won't update is to have your news as an iFrame which links to a file on anther site (like Ripway). This way, changing the file on the other server instantly changes the displayed information on the CG comic without needing to run an update. The bad news is that if you haven't already done this, it's too late to do it for this outage.

I've considered this when I first got my CG account but I quickly realized that
if I do this then my POG image on the main page would never show up because, according to the server, I never update and it only shows POG images for a comic within 7 days of that comics update.
(Yes, sadly, I get most of my visits directed from the CG main site or from my newsbox on other peoples comics)

I just posted this in another thread, but it bears repeating: another option is adding a comments box; it makes it super EZ for people to give feedback, and it gives you a way to issue updates in a situation like this.

Ironically, that's just what I was going to add to my site on this new update-which-is-not. Le sigh. Well, after it's all sorted, I'll be set for future crashes!

Ah! I see. I've had my account for only a few months. That would be why Enedlammeniel's suggestion didn't seem to be working for me. Thanks to both of you for your help! I'll stick with updating my Twitter and figure that folks will pay attention to the widget that's installed on my index page.

So as of yet, there are no workarounds for editing at least the indextemplate.html?
Unfortunately, I was still trying to set up my comic when this whole mess started out, and it ended up saving my indextemplate as an older version of the comic.html. I've been waiting for over a week now to try and update my index and my comic.htm sections, and haven't budged at all in queue. :/ It's more than a little discouraging.
