Okay- I'm officially stymied.
I've been trying for a few days to get things to work properly, and I'm not having much luck. My daily pages are updating fine, and I can get to them by typing their addresses into my browser.
However, I can't seem to get my index.html page to work. One thing that seems suspicious is that I have two workspace directories, and there isn't anything in the directions that mentions this. One is in my main directory, and one is UNDER public_html. They both seem to contain the exact same files. Which workspace directory is supposed to contain the indextemplate.html I want to use?
Also, I can't get my site to update. I've tried all types of updates from the Site Maintenance screen, but nothing seems to cause the creation of an index.html page.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Todd

First off, stop messing with anything in the public_html directory. Do not go there. You should only upload stuff to the workspace area.
Now, when you go to your workspace area, you should see the file indextemplate.html. You need to FTP that to your computer. Make a copy, because if you make a mistake, you can always have that copy to start over from.
Once you're done working on the indextemplate.html, ftp it back to your workspace area. It should replace the indextemplate.html that's already there.
When you do that, go to your members area via the browser and update your index page. It should show any changes you made. If it doesn't, refresh the page in the browser. Sometimes the browser will just show you a version that's stored in cache. A reload or refresh should get you the latest version.
If that's still not working, I fear you may have done something by working in both the workspace and the public_html areas. But I honestly couldn't know for sure without checking your site carefully.
Good luck!
------------------

Sorry, I should explain something. The automation that Keenspace offers generates an index.html from the indextemplate (as you probably already know). Whereever the original indextemplate was when you first went to your site (in the workspace directory) is where you should ftp your indextemplate. If you're putting indextemplate anywhere else, it won't be found and concequently your index.html won't be updated.
------------------

Under public_html you have an alias for your workspace directory. You'll notice that if you follow it, and then CD .., or back up following the .. link (depends on your FTP program) you'll end up at the root of your site, rather than in the public_html directory. public_html does not "contain" workspace. Just an alias.

I hope this helps!
------------------

(I was previously boardersandsister. I hadn't realized most people were using their real names instead of their comic strip titles.)
Thanks for your help, Tim. But I think you may have missed my question.
In my boardersandsister directory, I have two subdirectories: public_html and workspace. Under workspace, there are comics, data, images, and webpages. Under public_html, there are comics, d, and images, but also another workspace directory. This workspace contains exact copies of everything in boardersandsister/workspace (comics, data, images, and webpages). Even the files in each directory are duplicated.
My question was this: is this normal? Is there supposed to be a boardersandsister/workspace AND a boardersandsister/public_html/workspace? If so, then I will leave things alone. If not, I figure I need to contact the site administrators to help me sort things out.
I never said I was working in public_html, but even if I were, I doubt that would permanently mess things up. I'm assuming the system copies files, places them in the correct directories, and replaces ***tags*** with the proper file names. I understand that a great majority of new artists may not know much about computers and HTML, but I can't see why someone who knows what they're doing shouldn't be able to tweak anything in public_html. Sure, moving things around in public_html may break links, but I can't see how public_html is sacred.
That's sort of beside the point, anyway. My problem is that I have an indextemplate.html in my workspace directory (actually, both workspaces), and the system isn't making a copy of that and placing it in public_html.
Todd

Perfect, Howard! That's just the info I was looking for.
I'm using FTP explorer, and the only navigation in this program (at least, that I know about) is through a Windows Explorer-type tree. If there's a way to tell in FTP Explorer if a directory is an actual directory or simply an alias, I've not stumbled across it.
Anyway, now I know that's not the problem, I can concentrate on finding out what's up with my index.html.
Thanks again, Howard and Tim!
