Seeking Permission to use Gen-Chan as a Cameo in a webcomic

Post by Fesworks »

I sent an e-mail as well asking the same thing, but I have no idea how long that would take with everything, so to be safe I am posting the question here.... honestly I really wasn't sure where to ask this :/

I'm not trying to use this as a means to "pimp" my comic, which is why I;m not going to saying anything about it unless I'm asked... so I'm just going to ask in general:

the scene is a collage of a single character asking various different people about something, and everyone this person talks to does not know. each are in a seperate "scene" with no text, except for a narration which describes that noone that this person is talking to has any information about.

One thing I got the idea for this was having Gen-Chan in as one of the characters... the scene is G rated (though the comic as a whole is unrated, but does not really go above Web-14.

of course, proper credit and linkage on the site AND the comic image itself will be represented. But I'm still asking if I may please use Gen-Chan as a cameo!

Like I said, I wanted to see if I could get a general answer about a cameo before my e-mail may or may not get answered.

I hope it was OK for me to post in this forum... if not, I appologize. If more info is requested via this thread, I'll answer, if I'm told to just wait, that's fine. This scene is slated to happen next month some time.

To answer a question that will probably come up: No, it's not a comic hosted on CG, though there might be a couple crossing over with it that might be. I mostly thought it would be awesome to include Gen-Chan in this comic nonetheless.

Thanks for your time reading this :)

My guess is you'd have to ask the permission of the person who drew the Gen-chan in question, since there are many, many Gen-chans. Unless of course, you're drawing her yourself as an original design. Then, all you need do is have proper copyright/origin information somewheres to be polite. I'm guessing. Outside of the many character designs, the concept of the Gen-chan can be used openly, but without profit, if I understand the whole copyright thing correctly.

A good question. I was going to draw my own version (however asside from the face and hair, they all are very similar in design).

So yea, it would be my own design.

and as far as the profit thing, I have Project Wonderful ads, but all of that goes right back into advertising anyway.. besides, this thing is going to be chock full of cameos and crossovers (crossover as in both people do comics for it), than even making it for print is out of the question (and was never in the original plan either.).

so yea, non-profit.

Although I don't speak in any remotely official capacity, I'd be very surprised if anyone objected to you drawing Genchan in your comic.

And, hey! Free plug.

I think that by even Free Use rules of copyright law would allow me to do it anyway... but I just want to make sure is all.

Ack! Just noticed the Copyright for her to Jops in the Wiki.

Ok, I'll try to locate him.. I guess I was thinking she was CG property.
