I need help with the layout

Post by Trinacria »

Hi!
I'm new here and I have no idea how to change the look on my website, it's only plain white and boring.
trinacria.comicgenesis.com
I really need help with the layout. Does someone know where to click to make the background black and to put the comic into the centre and stuff.
Thanks the one who tells me :)

I think that's what you're asking for - there should have been a link to it once you got all your HTML made. I'll try and make it more clear for the next person.

This may sound a bit stupid but do I also use that site when I want it change the CSS on my comic site. You know, give it black background, make that the picture is in the centre. Where do I have to click to change the CSS on my webcomic? I already know pretty much about HTML but I can’t find the link that says something like this “Change the HTML on you comic site.
I only see

You need to do all the coding in an outside program (such as notepad) and use an ftp client to upload it to your site. It should all be covered in the Tutorials

You must connect to trinacria.comicgenesis.com, your username is trinacria and your password is whatever was e-mailed to you (or whatever you changed it to).

Do check the Step-By-Step Tutorial, it should answer most of your questions.

Okay, so far so good. :) I have figured it out how to put HTML on the index.HTML thing and so on but I can't upload it
Why not? The connection is perfect but whenever it starts to upload isn't it working.

Do not touch files in the public_html folder. Use the files in the workspace folder. See Step #7.

If that still doesn't work, what error message do you get when trying to upload?

It isn't an error message, or at least I think so. But I'm always disconnected and the small field that shows you how much that has been uploaded appears in only 1 second before it goes away again. The message that comes up says this "Once you are done editing the file click on the button to manually upload the file to the remote server. SmatrFTP monitors the file for changes and it can automatically upload the file to the server if it has been modified. To enable this feature select "Automatically upload file on change" in the combo box below"
And then is it the file, the size of the file and so on and a small button that says "Upload". I push it but the message comes back again and again and again.

Are you trying to edit stuff directly on the server? This could be the problem. You have to download the file to your own comp, edit it locally, then upload the edited version to your account.

No, I have downloaded it and everything. I guess that the problem is that I have no idea how to upload it.

I'll try to explain without screenshot. You are using SmartFTP, right?

1) In the top left corner, you should see your comicgenesis account. You have to open the "workspace" folder.
2) On the right, you'll see what files and folders are in the workspace folder: images, webpages, indextemplate.html, dailytemplate.html...
3) Right-click on some empty space in the area where these files and folders are listed and select "upload".
4) Browse for the file you want to upload (in your case, indextemplate.html) and click "ok" (or "confirm" or "upload", I don't recall what the button is labled and don't have the program in front of me atm).
5) It should ask you if you want to overwrite the indextemplate.html currently in your account; click "yes".

Voila, you just need to trigger a manual index only or regular update, or wait 24 hours.

WOW! I LOVE YOU!!! Thank you very much. It really helped me^^
But hey, why can't I upload my title? I tried to put on the Title on Images but it didn't work. The title is an image that's way.
I tried to put in on the index stuff like I did with the background but it just don’t want to appear. As I click on the index stuff that I have on my computer is it showing.

I use SmartFTP too, and that happens because when you right-click and edit a file, if you keep the text file open you can keep making small edits to the HTML without having to manually upload a new file after each edit.

As long as you keep the text file open after you choose edit, each time you save, just hit upload and it will upload it to the server for you.

trina, try this tutorial. Go through the whole thing, as it will help you understand basic html. This will help cut back questions in the future... it's that whole "give a man a fish, teach a man to fish" thing.

Thanks for the link^^
I just need help with one last thing and I'm done (I hope). I know how to create a link but I don't know if I first have to create the website that should be linked to. I want to do stuff like "Characters" "News" and "Info". Where do I create these pages? I guess that I first have to do them before I create a link to them. How do I get them an Internet address?

Open up notepad/your html editor and just start making it. You may want to copy-paste some design elements from your indextemplate (such as background color and banners), to keep these "extras" pages consistant. Then, build up the page from there.

After you've saved your new creation to your computer, upload it into workspace/webpages. Tada, the page will be there the next time you update, either manually or at midnight PST.

Now, you can link them. When linking, keep in mind that the "workspace" gets dropped. So your page url will likely be http://yourcomichere.comicgenesis.com/pagenamehere.html. No "workspace"
