Advertisement, site stores, tipjars, etc questions
Hello everybody,
Since the question "can I make money off my site?" comes up every few days, here's a sticky where info on this question can be consolidated. It'll probably be ported into the wiki one of these days too. Yay!
Here is a list of things you can and can't have on your Comic Genesis site:
Things you can have without problems:
-Stores, such as Cafe Press or Lulu.
-Tipjars/Donation Buttons
Things you can't have in any way, shape or form:
-Google ads or any other type of ads service that looks like the mandatory one. (This violates CG/Keenspot's agreement with the ad provider)
Things you can have if you jump through a few hoops:
-Adspace for which *you* control what shows up (as an example, "pay me 20$ and I'll link to your comic on my front page for a month!"). However, for this to be tolerated, you have to leave the mandatory ads in place and contact Keenspot to establish the terms of your profit-sharing. Profit-sharing is mandatory.
NOTE FROM KELLY: Let me take a moment here to explain things. CG is part of KeenSpot Entertainment. The ads on your site are through Keenspot, which is why you can get KeenSpot PREMIUM and have the ads removed. It's also why you have to deal with KeenSpot over ad sharing. Kisai and I have no access to the ad system, so any inquiries will be sent or pointed to KeenSpot. You may resume the regular post --STrw

This topic will be updated if comicgenesis policies change and with new information brought about by questions from our most brilliant comgenners. If you have questions and are/were/will be/might be/would have been a brilliant comgenners, post away.

Project Wonderful
Currently, Project Wonderful ads are allowed. They are considered the same as selling your own ad space. It isn't certain at this moment weither you must profit-share in all cases or if profit-sharing is required/enforced only over a certain amount (given that the vast majority of sites make barely a few pennies a day with PW).

Hi, I'm interested in putting some adspace on my webcomic, galacticus (http://galacticus.comicgenesis.com), but I'm pretty new at web stuff. I'll leave the mandatory ads in place. How exactly do I contact keenspot about profit-sharing? ^^

Contact Redwolf or Kisai about it and they can assist you.galacticus wrote:Hi, I'm interested in putting some adspace on my webcomic, galacticus (http://galacticus.comicgenesis.com), but I'm pretty new at web stuff. Thank you.
Edit: I PMed Kisai but have yet to get a reply... also, it says Project Wonderful ads are allowed, but haven't been fully worked out yet. Does that mean I can put one up in the meantime?
Edit: Okay, I asked for permission to put up ads a month ago, and I still haven't gotten a reply. How long do I have to wait? ;_;''

Thank you. But... what does that mean? I'll put up some Project Wonderful ads now, but I would really like to know the details of this profit-sharing thing as soon as possible.rkolter wrote:I would ask Kisai again; she is an immensely busy person and probably forgot about your pm.
Project Wonderful ads are allowed; so it is ok to put one on your site. You may have to profit-share with ComicGenesis. Just keep that in mind. That is what was being worked out.

Short version: if your comic is making a profit (making money on the back of CG's hosting and bandwidth) then you need to share with CG (think of it like sharing the cost of fuel when getting a lift by a friend in their car).
New Edit: For all ad related queries, you'll need to go through Keenspot directly, not Kisai nor Stredwolf. /edit

Ad/profit sharing questions need to go to Keenspot, as mentioned above. All I can do is point you to Darren (Gav) over at Keenspot. Kisai and I do not have access to the ad system, and we don't set policy.

Re: Advertisement, site stores, tipjars, etc questions
In the Wiki article "comic commenter" it shows how to get a box on your site that goes to the Haloscan site. I didn't realize until I put up my first comment that an ad would appear in this box. Is this allowed? It doesn't sound like it should be but if it isn't the article should be changed.
Edit: Hmm, it disappeared. Never mind, I guess. It must have something to do with the "raw_date" error; that's fixed now.

Re: Advertisement, site stores, tipjars, etc questions
So let me just make sure. Tip jars/donation button=OK? What does that qualify under?
I hope your not expecting me to make a joke not related to ninjas, pirates, Jesus, cyborgs, or a combination of all of those.
Re: Advertisement, site stores, tipjars, etc questions
A tip jar is anything with no product advertised, just you begging for money. It's customary to have art incentives, but that's just an extension of selling your own comic, which is what you're doing anyway. Most people use Paypal. Does that answer your question?

From the announcement on the Keenspot site, I understand Gav has retired.
Is there now a new go-to person for questions on the finer points of Keenspot's advertising policy?
