Sep 18th -- Comic server slowdowns/inaccessiblity

Post by STrRedWolf »

Kisai and I are trying to find out why bits of Autokeen are now acting like a horse being spooked on the same thing it's done over and over again, which is chewing up the CPU and causing web services to time out.

I've put in a hack of a patch to detect if it's running multiple updates of the same comic at the same time. It should keep us stable until ether we trace the problem and fix it, or replace that part of AutoKeen with AutoGenesis (aka WolfKeen out of beta).

(A side note -- AutoKeen origionally didn't know it was running. AutoGenesis is paranoid about that, so it'll leave a note saying it is running, and everyone else for that comic better bugger off until it's done.)

Thanks for keeping us in the loop, STrRedWolf!

We were trying to determine if it was server side or our respective computers. ("AutoGenesis is paranoid." )

Is it possible the system clock is off RedWolf?

I've run an update twice with Siteadmin. It's 11:30am. My file is in my \workspace\comics folder, is properly named, and so on. the update says it's running, then the updater says there are no updates in queue, but my comic doesn't move. :-?

I'm having the same problem. I've tried to manually update my comic three times, and even though I'#ve watched the progress of the command in the queue until there are no commands in the quewue, my comic is still sitting in the workspace/comics folder instead of on my front page where it belongs.

Thanks for keeping us posted, btw

Whew, well that is a relief.. At least I know it's not something I'm doing wrong. I've tried to update my comment section on the page, rechecked all the .html files, and everything is shiny, 'cept it won't update on the page. I've done three manual updates, and nada. But now that I know.. I'll calm myself down and be patient. Thanks for letting us know!

We had a bit of our database go down that controlls weither or not Autokeen is run. It's now fixed, so things are back up to normal.

The bottom line is that I can't update (and it looks like I'm not alone).

I still am not getting results from manually updating.

If the problem is resolved then I'm not sure what is going on quite but it's driving me batty. If you would be so kind, could you take a look at http://www.quitting-time.com? I have made multiple attempts to do this both this last night, this morning and just a few minutes ago.

Thank you!

I have to agree with the above problems. I've doubled checked all the .html sites, did a manual update, but the server isn't recognizing the changes. Sure, my comic is updated (which it did that last night) but not the comment changes that I made today. But the files were uploaded properly and the changes are contained in the files. Methinks there is still something amiss.

I got home, and my comic still had not updated so I:

1) Ftp'd out and deleted my copy of the comic from my workspace\comics directory.

2) Ftp'd a new copy in.

3) Re-did a manual, regular update.

4) Waited until the queue cleared, then waited more.

5) Went to my comic: http://www.reasonedcognition.com and did a hard refresh.

No good Redwolf - updates still aren't happening. :-?

Ugh. Forgot a ">1" in my patch. My bad. It's working now.

Am I really doing something wrong at this point? I've checked all my .html and it appears to be updating in site admin properly. All the webpages have updated EXCEPT for my main index.html. And no matter what I try, the comment will NOT update on the page. It's updated in siteadmin.. It's updated in all my various .html pages. Just not on the main page. Am i doing something wrong?

Would this problem have affected people trying to visit my site? My unique visitors stat dropped off considerably yesterday, to about 15-20% of the usual amount.

The server actually went down a couple of times, so yeah. The slowdown that preceded this downtime also would have affected your stats.
