Is there something wrong with my storyline dropdown?

Post by Dudegirl »

I am sure I have at least 19 pages, and I have put them all in the dropdown file, but when I go to the actual website of my comic, there are only FOUR! I made a lot more than four.
I've fucked the whole thing up havn't I?

Mind pasting the contents of your dropdown file? More likely than not, it's a syntax error somewhere that's breaking it all down (an extra period somewhere, or a rogue semicolon; perhaps even a stray ampersand that's not being parsed correctly.)

ADVENTURES IN FELIN HOME,/

Chapter one: Taniwha, /d/20050402.html
*
Page one, /d/20050421.html
Page two, /d/20050425.html
Page three, /d/20050430.html
Page Four, /d/20050505.html
Page Five, /d/20050508.html
Page Six, /d/20050510.html
Page Seven,/d/20050519.html
Page Eight, /d/20050608.html
Page Nine, /d/20050617.html
Page Ten, /d/20050621.html
Page Eleven, /d/20050630.html
Page Twelve, /d/20050703.html

Page fourteen, /d/20050720.html

Page Sixteen, /d/20050924.html
Page Seventeen, /d/20051009.html
Page Eighteen, /d/20060421.html

Apart from the part where I missed out a space (On page seven, which is a higher number than four, so shouldn't I have about six pages in the Dropdown?) I can't really see anything else that is missing or shouldn't be there.

Here's my shot at it

You changed your capitalization after four. You went from all lower-case to initial caps, then reverting to all lowercase for Fourteen. Maybe it doesn't like that?

So should it be caps, or lower?

Lower case seemed to be working, try that.

Ok, I've tried Lowercase. Hopfully that works.

Neither caps or lower works. Apparently I only have four pages. I'm sure, from what they taught me in kindergarten, I have more than four.

So, Is there anything I can actually DO? Or is the whole thing screwed beyond repair?

Do you have duplicate dropdown.txt files in your data folder? Make sure your data folder and dropdown.txt file are named in lowercase too. Also, make sure you still have the ***dropdown*** tag on your indextemplate.html . Sometimes people goof up and replace tags with the actual code generated on index.html.

Also, please make sure to link your comic with your actual questions (so that we can rule out a display problem on your end, or poke around what code we have access to).

Try putting quotation marks around the headings and page numbers (eg. "Page one", /d/20050421.html).

I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but all the text in my dropdown has the quotes and it seems to work.

Actually...

I think Oulawazou has it right... I hadn't thought about it before, but most times I have problems with something not updating when I change it are due to there being a duplicate of the file somewhere that it's taking preference to.

Well actually, come to think of it, I cannot delete the file from my FTP.

AT ALL!

When I try to upload the file it doesn't even change.

How are you going about uploading it, and what software are you using?

Software? There is a special kind of software to upload things into an FTP?
I'm using 'Teh Gimp'.
When I do try to delete the file, I click delete (Delete button to delete, simple) then the little box comes up saying are you sure? I am sure so I click yes. But the file is still there.
Is there anyway to fix this?

Um...

If you don't have it already, download Filezilla here if you use windows. or Cyberduck if you're using a mac.
Hopefully this will solve your problem with the FTP not accepting your changes...

Ok, I'm confused, you can upload files onto an FTP, yet you need to download something to upload them?

The software is to give your computer a way to communicate with the server (kinda like downloading a browser to view webpages) You can still read html files without a browser, but without a browser, html support is kinda cheesy. It's the same with FTP. You can connect to the FTP without downloading any extra software (in comicgenesis's case), but it can be buggy, and sometimes doesn't work at all. Download an FTP client, and you'll see what I mean. Windows and Mac have native FTP support (as does every major os, actually) but it can also be quite buggy. An FTP client will allow you to do things you can't currently do, (like saving your files to the server! ^.^)

To help you better understand, remember that "FTP" means "File Transfer Protocol". It's not a program, it's more like the name of an operation comps can do. Programs like Internet Explorer are not designed with FTP abilities in mind: they can do it, yes, in the same way you can use a brick to balance a table that has one leg too short. It'll work, sorta. But it's still better to get a new table leg, as these are designed first and foremost to keep your table even.

(how's that for a crappy analogy?)
