Spiffying my site makes it un-spiffy

Post by AllinGoodFun »

before I forget to state them, cause I wiil:

site: http://allingoodfun.keenspace.com
What I'm running: internet explorer on windows XP
My FTP program: Smart FTP

Yes, I've gone through the FAQ and Gear. If the answer to my question IS there and I simply missed it, by all means yell at me and slap me with a link.

I've been working on making my comic site work with frames: the comic in the top frame and a link page and a comments page on the bottom frames. I know that my coding is right (and quoted below...), because I can get everything to show up right on my computer when I open the file.

In attempt to get this same comic-links-text format on my comic site I edited the indextemplate.html file and the dailytemplate.html file to the code below, and uploaded a file named "indextemplatecode.html" which was in the place of the comic and contained all of the code for the original index template, my link page ("OtherDeadlySins.html") and my text ("PageText.html") into my FTP program. i uploaded all of these into the "workplace" folder in the FTP.

I then logged in and did a full page manual update of my comic.

When the comic updated it showed the frames, but in each frame it displayed an ad and an error message ("This file does not exist.
The Ever-Firey Bowels is hosted on ComicGenesis, a free webhosting and site automation service for webcomics.").

I imagine that the error is one on my part, but I don't know where my error is. I've left my site with the error messages and everything up, but I have backup copies of the original index and daily templates and can get my site back to the way it was originally with ease.

Any help in getting my comic to look the way (I think) my revised index template should have it look would be appreciated! (code is down below. I apologize in advance for the longness of it all.)

<p>I truly am alive. Truly I am.
<p>I've been busy, teaching myself HTML goodness, and you can even see the results of my handiwork. FRAMES! I bet so many of you hate me so hard now. ^.^ Check out the spiffy section to your left, though. Links! To other places!
<p>The clunky, awkawardness of the site will only last a while. I'm working out how to make it all more sleek and modern-riffic. Mmm. Modern-riffic.
<p>In comic news, I've been drawing like a mad person. I've finished off Eps 9 and 10 and am about half way through inking Ep 11. Which is good, because otherwise you guys would be waiting for me to draw each update, and that would be realy slow.
<p>See? There's reason for my infrequent updates.
<p>If anyone knows any good HTML or Photoshop tutorial sites toss me a link in an e-mail. I'm in learning mode.
<p>On a personal note, me and my significant other are celebrating our two-year annaversary on Wendsday. That's right, I've been going out with <a href="whatever-the-link-will-be">this</a> lovely fellow for a full two years. Scary, isn't it?
<p>As per always, I love e-mails! Drop me a line. I'm also open to suggestions for future comic-plots, comments, concerns, fan art (ha ha, I'm sure.), anything!
<p>Have fun!

Where exactly did you upload indextemplatecode.html, OtherDeadlySins.html and PageText.html ? Right now, it's looking for the code in "public_html". Are the files located somewhere else? Also, do you have the file names exactly right? Comicgenesis is case-sensitive, i.e. "PageText.html" and "pagetext.html" aren't the same thing.

Woo. Making progress. It was mostly that I was putting the pages into the wrong file. I thank ya greatly.

I've got it now to show the link page and text page properly, but how do I get the comic to show up? If you look at the site (just for good measure, it's http://allingoodfun.keenspace.com) the original index template is showing up where I want it to, but it's not converting to the actual name of the comic and the comic itself and all that spiffyness. If that makes any sense.

If "indextemplatecode.html" is just a copy of the original index template, shouldn't it show up the same way as it did before I put it in a frame, or does it require a specific file name?

The indextemplatecode should be called indextemplate, and should be the one in the workspace folder. The others should be in the webpages folder. There are other ways of doing it, but you lose automation. Besides, frames suck and it's damn near impossible for them to look anything but ugly.
You're missing a body tag on indextemplatecode.html by the way.
