I think they show how much you have left till the next forum rank. So when the bar is full, you get to the next one. Or something.

It just looks pretty 8)

The bar represents the number of posts which is directly correlated to how long you have to live. There for, post wisely, or the bar will fill and you will implode.

Or increase to the next rank, I donno.
