Indextemplate

Hey guys, I'm having another problem. I was recently attempting to update my site. I was doing fine, until I tried to edit indextemplate again to tweak things a bit, and it came up with an error message that said something like "Sorry, indextemplate.html is not a text file," you'll have to find another way to update it."

It was working just fine a second ago. Did I do something wrong? :(

What program were you trying to use to edit it?

Unless I'm mistaken, that's an error message often reported by people who try to modify indextemplate.html directly on the server. What you have to do is download the file on your computer, modify the local version then upload that modified version back to the server, overwriting the old one.

Or keep the indextemplate.html file on your computer and upload a copy of it to Keenspace so you don't have to keep on download/upload-ing every time you want to change something. Keeping a copy on hand all the time is a Very Good Idea.

In fact, keeping a copy on some form of permanent, removable media off the computer entirely (better yet, at a completely different physical location) is a Very Good Idea.

Computer crashes aren't the only bad things that can happen to data. Your computer could be stolen. Your house could burn down. Fire! Plague! Locusts! Frogs!!! :o

lol, I see. Thanks, I'll do that. I'm using the butch server, if that's what you mean when you were asking what program I was using.

No. That would be the computer you're logging into. The program would be something like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera (among web browsers) or something like Filezilla among FTP programs.

You can use a web browser for ftp by typing:

ftp://yourcomic:yourpassword@yourcomic.keenspace.com into the address box at the top of the browser. In Windows, you can then drag and drop files between your computer and the site online, right click to delete, etc. I've tested this with the combination of IE6 and Windows 2000 (my home and work setup).

If you haven't done so, please go over to gear.keenspace.com and read "FTP Basics" in the Cadet's Manual. Of the FTP programs they list there, I've used FileZilla (freeware with no nag screens).

I was actually asking what program was being used to edit the file. Like Notepad or SuperNetEditor (this doesn't exist). Now I see it was WebFTP.
