Heyas folks. I could use a little help on a few subjects. I'm actually rather quick at learning new things, if I know where to look for answers, but still -- please use small words when discussing web stuff.
(1) How EXACTLY does one specify storyline dropdowns? I don't plan on utilizing this in the near future, but I may eventually have storylines instead of single-day bits.
(2) How EXACTLY does one join dropdowns? How does one include a dropdown on their page? Can a comic be represented in multiple dropdowns?
(3) In regards to Java and/or Flash:
(3a) Are special programs needed to create Java, or is it all text-based? (I know how to create Flash animation, at least in theory -- you're not likely to see any out of me for months at the bare minimum.)
(3b) Can either one be included on Keen pages? (i.e., is there any reason the server would NOT support them, or is it the browser rather than the server, or how does it work?)
(3c) If I pick up the text of some Java that someone sent me and plug it into my templates (altering file names as necessary to represent my own comic and not theirs), will that be sufficient, or am I missing an important step?
As you can see, I'm not a programming guru. I'll admit that I use only a text editor to create my pages because the Front Page Express software I have access to scares me (how can I fix a problem if I don't know the process?), but my biggest problem now is just not knowing where to go to get the answers I want.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
--Strange/Dave
P.S. -- also, could someone explain to me the difference between total hits, files, pages, visits, and kilobytes, just so I'm clear on the terminology?
------------------

unhappy about it.
[This message has been edited by Somebody Strange (edited 04-24-2001).]

I understand Java to be all in text like HTML. I've used it a wee bit... You can pick up small scraps if you look around.
"P.S. -- also, could someone explain to me the difference between total hits, files, pages, visits, and kilobytes, just so I'm clear on the terminology?"

Pages -- Numbers of HTML documents accessed by people. MOST IMPORTANT. Person reads index, 2 comics, and a links page = 4 pages.
Visits -- Any attempt to access anything on your page with a time limit. Person reads index, 2 comics, and a links page = 1 visit. Person looks at a graphic of yours in, hypothetically, KS Newsbox = 1 visit. Person reads 1 comic and comes back a couple hours later to read another = 2 visits.
Hits: Number of files requested. Six files on your page = 6 hits, etc. It's roughly the same as files, and both are negligible.
KB: The number of kilobytes accessed on your account.
------------------

Check the ***storyline*** tag in the tagtorial. There Gav has a link to a description page on how to work it.

The main dropdown you join by going into your site's user info page and selecting "Yes! I want to be in the main dropdown!"
The inidividual group dropdowns you head on to the Gear's Dropdown page (PDI handles them), and let us know.

quote:
