Same thing at my site. Seems like just when things are going smoothly, changes are made that mess things up.

I'm not naming names, but it just seems that people don't understand quite exactly what's going on. Some of you act like they're somehow at fault for these problems.

I had to wait four months for my account, and then had problem after problem with updating, tags, the whole sort. I've been one of them who had their site down, time and time again. I can't get into the user database, so I can't fix my update time. So my site thinks it's March 1st when it's actually March 2nd. That really affects how you run a site.

And do I complain?

Now I'm not attacking anyone who's just reporting a problem, of course not (or just anyone period). I just want to get a little understanding here. Just try to be a little optimistic.

Sigh...I hate to be a wet blanket, Nick, but when you've been here for over a year and a half, as I have, and you've seen these same problems month after month after month, you tend to get a bit frustrated. I know the Keen folks are doing their best to get these things fixed, but everyone has a breaking point for their patience. I don't know about anyone else, but my site has been down since 8 pm PST on 2 March, 2002. It is now almost 8 am PST on 3 March, and still no sign of my site. Twelve straight hours of downtime is a bit hard to bear. Telling people to be patient and not complain is only going to make them feel more angry.

How about a little compassion for those of us who have suffered through these changes for nearly 2 years? Is it too much to ask, that we be allowed to voice our concerns and complaints, without being told we're whining and being unreasonable? This is a help forum, after all, not a pat-Keen-on-the-back forum.

Nothing wrong with beind frustrated; I am as much as you are. One thing I have a problem with is people are are the first to come here and complain about a problem, but don't help out in return. And truthfully, it's not nearly as bad as it could be, too..

I agree with Nick. Yes, it's a little frustrating when Keen goes out. But they're usually good about getting it up again, and please try and remember, the service they're providing is being provided for FREE.

The site makes its money apparently off banner ads, the market for which is not in the best place right now, so they can't be making too much off the 'Space. I think it would behoove us to be very, very nice to the Space guys these days. We want them to keep fixing KeenSpace, and we want them to keep thinking it's worth it.

There's a differnce between complaining and bringing a problem to the attention of the administrators.

Sometimes the complaining is justified, sometimes not.

I'm sorry. Keenspace is not free. You get the site in exchange for displaying their banner ads on every page of your site. That is not free. It is a trade.

And I'm sure that the others who complained before I posted *have* let the admins know there's a problem. I've written them, twice, myself, and I *always* write to them before posting anywhere about it. I don't like the implication that none of us have the sense to do that basic thing.

If you guys want to happily accept what is now fourteen straight hours of downtime, almost a full weekend without ftp access, and other problems of this caliber which occur on a *regular basis,* feel free to do so. But don't tell me I have no right to complain. Regardless of whether or not any of us have paid money for this service, we were *promised* a service that we are not getting. Under those circumstances, every complaint is justified.

I happen to know Teri and Chris and Gav, personally, and I know they are not going to shut the servers down because people complain when they have problems. If you think they are such jerks that they only keep the servers going because a few people kiss their butts no matter what, you're wrong. They're all adults. They're all businesspeople. They know how to take criticism. If they ever shut the servers down, it will be due to lack of funds to keep them going, and not anyone's valid complaints.

And then there is me, who even though she's tried to connect to FTP 20 times getting the

Connection timed out.
Connection closed.

Every time and doesn't take a hint...

Don't mind me, I'm just bored and indirectly complaining...

The keenspace server (tor) is down, that's where all the username.keenspace.com sites are. phpbb and www are unaffected as they are on two different machines.

All the problems with "keenspace" have been a direct consequence of moving the keenspace sites off keenspot's server.

There have been hardware problems, a day ago the partition table got corrupted and the /usr path vanished(that is where the binaries for the apache are)

The server has been plagued with "heavy usage" problems (people, set your ftp retries to greater than 60 seconds!)

if you try to ping username.keenspace.com you will realize that the server isn't responding, AKA it's not "connected" to the internet.

phpbb has been experiencing a different problem we can't pin down (I'm sure you have all noticed how you can't globally login to the forums.)

So please be patient.

Then no doubt you know how much work they put into making KeenSpace work as well as it does. I seriously doubt that for the last fourteen hours they've all been sitting around playing Playstation while the server burns. Maybe you know better. I don't know.

And it is true, there is nothing wrong with pointing out that the server is down. What I'm addressing are posts like the gentleman a few lines up who said something to the effect of "I'd complain, but no one cares." I'm sure he will find that that's crap.

By GOD, I am FED UP with this free and really quite incredibly convenient service, and SICK AND TIRED of the volunteers that put in thousands of thousands of hours of unpaid time maintaining and running it!

How dare they interfere with my utter convenience in posting whatever pops into my head 24/7! How DARE they provide something that would cost me hundreds of dollars a year in exchange for the pennies that the ads on my strip bring in!

I'm "Captain Sarcasm!" And I'm firmly on the side that appreciates Keenspace and how hard everyone works to keep it up and running. Regardless of what people were "promised" -- and who they know personally -- they always have the option of actually shelling out for their own Web site and putting their money where their strip is.

Myself, I'm happy to contend with down time. Hell, I'd be happy with three times as much down time, in exchange for everything I'm getting here for no dollars out-of-pocket.

And there's a wide, wide gulf between kissing ass and simply being grateful.

Even free services should have a level of reliability because they depend on the ad banners to help support the site and when there are problems, it's not just us who suffer.

*And I'm very frustrated, but have very little room to complain because I have another site,... but I have readers who are using inferior browsers who can't get there and need Keenspace to read... plus.. it's finally my turn to get on the Keenime spotlight... and I can't log into two of my sites... 0.o The others are refusing to update and another one won't even show the index page.... this is entering week 2.

And then.. I add WHO CARES ABOUT THE FORUMS JUST LET US UPDATE OUR COMICS!!!!!!! UPdates are more important than forums

The latest downtime is not due to the forums; they were backing things up to move Keenspace off of Keenspot.

It's just my point about this whole thing is that these are all hardware problems that cannot be helped.

While I'm grateful for the free service, I can't help but frustrated from time to time. It's an inconvenience to the cartoonists, it's money to the advertisers. I'm sure their satisfaction or lack of satisfaction speaks volumes.
