How to access your strip's HTML in the twilight of Comic Genesis

Post by [geoduck] »

Someone wrote to me asking how to access his old CG strip as this site slowly sets in the west, so I thought I'd post the info here in case anyone else happens by with this question. As of March 2021.. The web-based update system is long broken. As far as I know, the only way left to make changes to your strip/your HTML coding is to use FTP, and the once-a-day auto-updating setup. I'm a Luddite and use an ancient stand-alone FTP program, but your web-browser should be able to access the site. If you still have your CG user name and password, enter or click on the following address:

ftp://butch.comicgen.com

You will be prompted to enter your info, and then you can copy any strip-files or changed HTML into the appropriate directory under "workspace". These changes will not show up until the auto-updater kicks in, which by default happens at roughly midnight according to (I believe) what time-zone you selected when you signed up with CG way back when. So yeah, if you get something wrong, you'll have to wait a day and try again. Obviously I wouldn't recommend trying to host your comic under these conditions (I use it as a bareboned backup site for my main comic), but at least you can give a public goodbye or post a re-direct message. Any more questions, I probably can't help, but ask away.

Oh god, is that really where we are now? The previous workaround isn't working anymore? Man I wish we could hear from admins about this. If they're going to officially give up, a warning would be appreciated.

I was just able to update my fanart page just fine using http://siteadmin.comicgenesis.com:8080/ ... /login.cgi which is the only thing that's worked for some time now, as far as I know
but I couldn't figure out how to edit my previous post, so...
