When I try to put a gif to the left of the ***advertisement*** tag I get this annoying little space between the pic and the ad, this dosen't happen when I place the pic to the left of the ad

I had a similar problem, and originally tried using a table structure (set the width of the table with the ad to the width of the ad) I finally created an image and set it as the background of the cell, thus filling the white space.
