help with FTP?

Post by Weatherlight »

In an attempt to give my site a simple facelift i opened my FTP program (smartFTP in my case) and chose the "view" command for the indextemplate to bring up a notebook containing the html. Then i made changes to the HTML and saved it but, what do i do after this to upload it or whatever in order to update my page and see these changes? Basically i just need to know how to upload this stuff to my index page so that i can see the changes that i made on the internet. I already read the tutorial but it still doesn't work. Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Anything you upload must be run through autokeen before it actually shows on your site. http://siteadmin.keenspace.com/ and run a manual update (regular update for indextemplate.html or anything in /workspace/webpages, full update for dailytemplate.html). If this doesn't appear to work, try forcing your browser to reload the page. Shift-Refresh usually works.

Faub, I don't thing that's the issue. It's not a Keen thing, it's an FTP thing.

Weatherlight: When you select a REMOTE file in nearly any FTP program, then VIEW, you are not looking at the file itself, but rather a COPY of the file somewhere in a TEMP folder on your computer.

So, you make your changes, and save, and then either 1) the file is automatically deleted (it's TEMP, after all), or 2) it stays in some obscure place on your hard drive.

What you need to do: TRANSFER the file to a known directory (desktop, My Documents, whatever), then EDIT it (use View if you must, but do it on the LOCAL file), then UPLOAD it (and overwrite the old version).

Then do what Faub said about running an update.

On of the first tutorials I saw advocated this: the best way to do a Keen site is to keep local copies of ALL your files in a directory structure similar to /workspace/. It's never failed me yet -- edit locally, then upload when ready.

Alright, that makes sense. Also just one more question, when i transfer a comic file to the comic folder will AUTOKEEN update for me or is there something else i must do? I already made sure that it is in date format and everything. Thanks for the help.

All you have to do is upload the comic, whatever the date may be, into the comics folder in workspace. Autokeen will then transfer it to public.

hoo-boy....got another problem...-.-
Ok, i made a backup copy of the workspace folder on my comp., changed the index template around so that it looked better, and uploading this all fine, however the new template only shows up for the most recent page of the comic and not the first page.....does anyone have any idea why this could be? After i changed the indextemplate i simply uploaded it to the workspace folder to overwrite the old one, thus shouldn't the old layout be gone? anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.

Indextemplate only affects the index, that is, the latest page of your comic (in this case). To get the same changes for the other pages in the archive, you'll have to change dailytemplate.
