I think Boardy's FTP is still off-line as well as its Auto update. I think those only work for YDK right now, sorry Ghastly.

Speaking of Keenspace servers...

Post by RHJunior »

... How do you tell which one your sites are on?

I'd like to know which one my strips sit on right now.

If you got your account before June 1st 2003 you're on Boardy and after that you're on YDK (I think, I'm fairly certain).

Yeah that's the part that pisses me off the most.

It doesn't matter how many times I tell people that all technical aspects of my comic are completely out of my hands. I have no control over whatever it is that's fucking with their proxy and/or firewall. I have no control over whatever it is that causes Keenspace to crash every couple of weeks for days at a time. Yet still I get dozens of e-mails every freaking day either bitching about the downtown or bitching about the proxy/firewall issues.

God damnit! I just draw freaking comics. Period! Bitching to me does nothing to fix any tech problems but piss me off.

Same here with Stalag '99. Point 'em to http://www.keenspace.com. We *ARE* transferring everyone over to Butch, but it's over the 'net itself because Boardy and YDK are on Sagonet and we're going back to HE.NET -- hopefuly with the assumption that we aren't going to be spam-blocked.

Whoa, over the internet? How do you transfer so many huge files like that!

How do you transfer big files like that, you ask? Why, over big pipes, of course. :D

Most Colocation facilities have BIG connectivity - multiple DS-3 [or faster] lines (usually fiber-optics) to the world, managed switches, and 100BaseT and 1000BaseT "gigabit" ethernet links to the servers. The kind of fast that you or I can only dream about.

Throw some serious bandwidth at the problem, and you can move the files between facilities easily.

What Ghastly said (except that I have a lot more sympathy for the bitchers. They don't, and shouldn't *ever* have to know a thing about Keenspace, auto-updating systems SQL databases and all the other stuff that makes comics run. If you weren't a cartoonist - or a computer geek- , wouldn't the mere mention of that stuff give you narcolepsy?)

Also, people who visit regularly can be divided into two categories - those who are fanatical enough to go to the forum, and those who don't. My experience is that people who have made up their minds about not being interested in the forum won't ever go to the forum, will stop noticing links to the forum even if you more them to the top and make them blink red and add a sound file saying "click on the blinking red link to go to the forum and read what's going on - not that I would do that if I could. And guess what? They're right too. I have no right to demand that they go out of their way to read about the things that I happen to want to tell them.

The upshot of this, though, is that after two weeks of no updates, people are beginning to email me to ask me if I've died. Please reinstate ftp so I can at least manually update and tel everyone what's going on.

I think Ghastly is just pissed about the people who KNOW what's going on, and STILL continue to bitch even though he's told them that there's nothing he can do about it.

looks like about 80% of the Keenspace is restored.

It's assumed that it may return tommorrow.

I hope so, I finally want to join Keenspace so I can move my webcomics "Gag-O-Rama" from Geocities to Keenspace.

I already joined it actually, but I didn't have time to move it there, but once SPACE is fixed, I'll immediately do that

You think that's bad. I missed my comic's second birthday because of this downtime.

The inability to ftp an update to my front page has me wishing that Keenspace instead leave the 403 error on (or some generic "technical difficulties, please standby" msg). That way my visitors get some idea that the server has crashed. As it is the lack of a new comic all week suggests to some that I've gone on hiatus again... :(
Steps to a happier life:
1. Delete all webcomics in your links section and bookmarks. 2. Bookmark or Link to the following URL: http://cdc.keenspace.com 3. Never, ever link or bookmark any other webcomic again. 4. If you have a webcomic, delete it and promise to never work on it again. Instead redirect it to http://cdc.keenspace.com 5. If you meet anyone who has not done the steps 1-4, advise him/her to do so. Right away. 6. Thank you for supporting my webcomic. And enjoy your new, happier life!

FTP and Updating is turned off for a reason, the files are being copied, and allowing you to change them during the copy will wind up updating the wrong version. I didn't bring mysql and FTP back up because the machine that is currently boardy I'm not trusting to be stable. Autokeen is also not running, so there is no way to simply run a bulk update putting 'patiently wait for the system to start updating on friday/saturday.'

YDK is going to get some of the same effect once boardy's stuff is moved over.
