Okay. My comic is MEAN MAILBAG. Mean Mailbag is about a talking bag of U.S mail, and his cruel, mean-spirited adventures. That's all good and fine. My original comic, which I decided not to do as soon as I got my account was called Walmart-Survivor. I uploaded all my Walmart Survivor comics, but, like I said, I have since changed my account, and changed ALL the Walmart-Survivors to Mean Mailbags in the FTP, and today, when my site finally got changed to http://meanmailbag.keenspace.com , I had Walmart Survivor #1, and MeanMailbag #3 both staring me in the face for some reason, even though I changed ALL the COMICS in the FTP dealie.

Now, I understand this problem can be sorted quite easily, but what I dont understand how to change is the SIZE of my comic. IT'S HUGE! In real life, MeanMailbag (the one under Walmart Survivor if you visit my site) is a little shorter than the width of your computer screen. Online, the comic is enormous, and has to use a bottom slide button to see it, alot like Walmart-Surviovr, which I decided not to do for that reason. Have I lost everyone yet? Probobly.
Basically, I need to know how to make my comics smaller.

Ok for the image size problem, you're probably scaned them in at a really high resolution. You should use an image editing program (Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc.) to reduce the size of the image file. Also when you scan them in the future you will want to use a significantly lower dpi setting. I'm not sure exactly what setting is good, but you can experiment. Hope this helps!
- Aaron
------------------

The standard internet resolution is 75 DPI, if you scan at a higher resolution than this, your images will look huge, unless you scale them back. This is actually a good thing to do as it makes the comic look smoother, and is a trick known as anti-aliasing.
What I've done below is scanned the same image three times in black and white at the different resolutions, coloured them and then scaled them back to the original size.
It easy to see that the higher the original resolution, the better it looks. The only limit is what your system can handle.

------------------

you started going on about DPI and lost me. The only program i have, Is PSP 6, and am not sure how to change my size. When I view it in PSP, when I zoom in and out, at the top, when it says 1:2, that's the perfect size for all my strips, but on the net, it's more like size 1:1. I just want to know what I have to do to keep it at 1:2. If you wanted to find the dimensions of a standard comic for me, which would be very much appreciated, If you can find the time, please help this struggling cadet.

I don't use that program, but I'm guessing by "zooming", you're only changing the view. This is for zooming in and working on details, then zooming out and seeing the overall picture. No matter what the zoom is set at, it doesn't change the actual size of the picture.
What you need to do is look for some kind of "resize" or "dimension" control in the program. The way you know it's the right dimensions is that whatever you see when your zoom is 1:1 is what you'll see on your web page.
You'll have to clean out the Wal-Mart comics manually. Even though it is strongly suggested that people don't tinker around in the public_html folder, this is one case where you have to, since they've already been moved into public_html by the system. Go to public_html/comics and make sure all of the Wal-Mart comics (like 20010516.gif) are deleted. Then do a full update.
As a side note, the tags for your navigation controls all need to be "day" instead of "comic". For example, ***first_day***, not ***first_comic***.
------------------

I apologise for getting too advanced on you.
in PSP 6, you can resize an image pressing Shift+S (or by going into the image menu and clicking resize). In your case you're probably best off by setting 'Percentage of the original' to 50. Your comic will look the best if you leave this 'till last tho'.
------------------

I've used both PSP 5, 6, and I think I have 7 in there somewhere too... I think I have too many computers o_O;
Anywho, as was stated earlier, Shift-S will work for resizing, but I figured I'd throw in a few more tips I've stumbled across myself. ^_^
NEVER make a comic more than 600 pixels wide... unless you want readers to scroll. The one thing that frustrated me more than anything else while checking out websites (yes, I did -research- before I built my first website ^_~) was having to scroll. You can set the pixel size in PSP in the resize feature.
When scanning stuff in, to clean it up (before you color or resize!) I suggest changing the brightness/contrast settings. I use -50 for brightness and +50 for contrast to get nice sharp lines.
That's my only tips for black and white comics... I've wandered into doing most of mine in color (masocistic, ain't I? ^_^).
On a side note, you need to change the links at the bottom of your page... they all point to the FPT site (i.e. ftp://Walmart-Survivor@walmart-survivor ... boutme.htm)
Good luck! ^_^
Martha (and cats)
StarCrossed Comics : 'Camera Angles', 'Beta Virs-ion', and 'A Helping Hand'

For my comic's scanning process I downloaded the shareware ACDSee, which can do most BASIC imaging tasks except for coloring. It does all I need it to without the considerable learning curve of Photoshop (I tried PS. Hated it.)
I scan in at 300 dpi (couldn't tell the difference between 300-600), crop it, then resize to 750 pixels wide.
With ACDSee, and most imaging programs, you can also decide the compression rate for the images, if size is a problem. But more compressed images look worse than less compressed.

Here's my rationale:
Most folks can see ok, even with glasses, the screen resolution of 1280x1024. However, a few monitors can't drive up that fast. This included LCD screens, which are just caching up. Alot of them are 640x480, even though a few are a respectible 800x600. Chose 800x600.
Now expand the browzer to the full 800x600 screen. Most websites are scaled to that, but that's a bit off topic. You'll notice the window decorations take a good amount of space, about a 2-4 pixel border, and the scroll bar takes up another 16 or so across the screen. This leaves about 760 pixels left, depending on if you are in Windows, Mac, or X11 (unix platform). If the latter, then it's depends also on the window manager. I'm picking 760 as a nice round number.
Unless you tell it a specific border size, the browzer will take 4 to 8 pixels on each side for a border of the page. Assume 8. That's 744, if we were exact.
Now consider that since things are going to vary, and we want no horizontal scrolling, we would want to give some slack. Give it about 24 pixels, which would be more than enough to cover it. This gives it to 720 pixels across.
Now change the size of the comic to 720 pixels wide, and and let the graphics program (GIMP/PSP/Photoshop) scale the comic down proportionally. Nice.

There's another way to of reducing the file size:
Under the 'Colours' menu try setting the reducing the number of colours to 256.
If it looks hideous, undo it (ctrl+z) and save as a JPG image - adusting the quailty until you reach a good balance between file size and image quailty (50-70K is good if you can get it.)
If it looks good tho', save it as a PNG image. At 256 colours (8-bit) PNG's are smaller files than GIF's, and you won't have to worry so much about Unisys asking for money.
------------------
