Virus alerts on ComicGenesis?
Hi, I just got this email from one of my readers. He said,
"But what is not cool is that I got some popup this morning warning me of
some virus and then trying to download some program on my computer. Not
cool at all. It happened right when I clicked on your strip and I only got
one panel in before everything went crazy. You may need to chew some ears
off on your end. Until then, I guess I'll have to settle for checking your
strip at the library or at Kinko's."
Anybody know what this is about?

I just went to your comic and flicked back through a dozen pages - unable to duplicate symptom.
Has this happened to you?
Did the person report anything else?

Sorry for the delay in responding. No, it hasn't happened to me, and I haven't heard about it from anyone else. All I know about it is that one email a reader sent me.
Re: Virus alerts on ComicGenesis?
This has just happened to me today. I visited darkencomic.com on Keenspot, and as the page was loading, it suddenly redirected to another page which said my computer was at risk, and offered a 'complimentary scan'. It just happened again from my own webcomic on Comic Genesis.
My firewall's up and I did a full virus check on my machine. I don't think the problem is at my end. It sounds like something is up with Keenspot and Comic Genesis. Something in one of their ads, maybe?

Would have to be one of the ads then.
Not sure what the proper procedure would be at the moment on how to get it fixed, since CG does not really control the Ads - KeenSpot Entertainment does. But if the issue is happening with the KeenSpot comics as well then it is much more likely that the ad would be pulled quite quickly.

I'm afraid I didn't get any details on either of the redirects (my first instinct was to kill them before they could do anything). Given that Jim posted about this a while ago and it just happened to me, and it hasn't happened again, it sounds really sporadic. Makes it hard to track down.

Re: Virus alerts on ComicGenesis?
A while back STrRedWolf posted how to identify the ads. Simply looking at the source code is insufficient. Something about a DOM inspector or something - but I have not been able to locate that post. It came up about two or three years ago when there was a rogue Ad in the system that needed to be identified. I believe the DOM thingy identifies the id of the ad itself so that it can be reported and removed.
Lamentably, I didn't add it to the CGWiki at the time...

Re: Virus alerts on ComicGenesis?
I got a similar thing, but my virus program says it's my page banner. It's just a png file I uploaded, and it apparently have a virus. The odd thing is that it doesn't happen on any page but previous strips. Not the index page, or the links page, or the "about" page, the gallery page, or the archives page. So it might have something to do with the dailytemplate page I'm using, but it's identical to the index page (save for the extra slash for pictures).
The really weird thing is that there seems to be this extension on the picture address, that is not listed on the source page to link to, "\{gzip}". What the hell does that mean? My picture isn't even compressed.

So did you get the redirect thing happening?Lordthenightknight wrote:I got a similar thing, but my virus program says it's my page banner. Your banner link on your archive page seems to be broken. Did you remove it because of the bug?

I see it on the archive page (as in the page with the calenders) just fine. It's the previous pages it doesn't show up, even though I'm using the same html as the other pages, save for the slash that the dailytemplate seems to require.Noemz wrote:So did you get the redirect thing happening?Lordthenightknight wrote:I got a similar thing, but my virus program says it's my page banner. Re: Virus alerts on ComicGenesis?
It's the previous pages. When it's just the address http://deathbychibi.comicgenesis.com/im ... s_logo.png, it works fine. But add the d/ for the archived pages, then it reads it as being infected, with HTML:Iframe-inf. I might think that's my system, but if others are getting the same...
EDIT: And it doesn't look to be the picture. I just cut the link to the picture for the dailytemplate, and it stated the background picture was infected, even though the other pages are still fine with that as well. So now the previous pages don't have links to either, and they work fine. So is there a server issue?
