Ongoing comic question

Post by Galbador0 »

Okay, I know that Autokeen will update the page of the user with the new comic page,
but there are two questions I like to ask:

1. If I upload a new comic page, do I have to make a new website for this page, so
that the reader is able to go back to page 1 if he/she just found the comic or does
Keen Comic automatically?

2. We all gave a date when Keen Comic should update the comic, but what if we
upload new pages earlier. Does the auto uploader only upload at this date
(in my case Sunday 4pm) or also earlier? I mean, I know that one is able to manual
update it via the admin tool, but since this is not working at the moment, does
this mean that the comic is only updated at this date at the moment?

Oh, one more thing. Do I have to change the line of my indextemp everytime I upload
a new comic page or is there a way to make this automatically? I mean, it would be
that bad, but why making too much trouble if one can avoid it XD

My comic page:

Question 1) If I understand correctly, then the answer is no. What ComicGenesis does is create a new page for every comic you upload using the dailytemplate.html Using the ***first_page*** keentag, you can direct your new readers to the first page of the comic.

Question 2) The date in the name of each comic is the date that CG will upload that comic into the public folder. Therefore, the public will only have access to the comic on or after the date in the file name

Question 3) The title will change automatically, but only show the name of the comic and the date of the comic. To my knowledge, I don't think there is a way to change it from that. For example, I don't think you can manually change it to say hello world! I believe that the <title> html is dictated server side.

Hope that helps!

PS, if I'm wrong or misunderstood a question, please feel free to correct me, Thanks!

Question 1: Part of the idea behind CG is that it is automated - all an author needs to do is upload their comics and the server will take care of the rest. This includes creating new html pages each time your comic updates.

Example: if you have pages/strips A, B, C, and D with D as the newest comic, then D will be on the index, C will be what you will see if you click the "previous" button and A is what you'll see if you click "first".

If you then upload comic E, then E will show on the index and D will be moved back one so that now it is the first one after clicking "previous".

Question 2: Lian is right with this one. If you have two Christmas strips in the system, one of last year and one for this year then the server will show last years (it is now after December) but will not show this years (since it is not December yet). The future comic will remain "hidden" in the workspace section until the 25th of December, when it will be moved to the public_html side and be visible by your readers.

Question 3: What do you mean by "change the line"? If you are referring to the links, then no - it is automatic. If you are referring to the title then there are a few ways of getting custom titles for each page but it is a bit of work to get it to happen. If you mean something else, can you re-phrase the question?

@ Lian: Yes, the titles can be changed. Pretty much everything on the templates can be customised to be however the author wishes. The only two limitations are that you have to have the Ad tag at the top of the page and you have to have the "hosted by" message at the bottom of every page (including the ones without comics) - though even the exact wording of the hosted by message can be customised.

Makes sense.

Oh, this is what my actually indextemplate page looks like at the moment.

I'm glad to have helped!

Although, you left out an "E" in ***advertisement*** and so it's just showing as ugly text. And anyway, you can remove it, because it looks like you already have an advertisement at the top of your page. It was probably put there automatically. The advertisement must be at the very top of your site (nothing above it) or ComicGenesis will put it there for you, and I think it did just that.

Also, your navigation buttons don't seem to work... but that might just be because you only have one page up at the moment?

Besides that, your site looks good! Best of luck in your comicking venture!

Ah... so all I have to do, is to upload the comic and the server does the rest, including the pages and the navigation arrows.
Yes, assuming that you have uploaded next/previous buttons. The server will automatically create the html code for each day as it updates.
The only thing the creator can do is to make the page looks nice and maybe customize a cast and other info pages, right?
Pretty much. In order to make the site look pretty, then you need to download, modify and then upload the two template files. These are fairly straightforward to modify (if you know a bit of html) and you can change almost everything on there.

For the extra pages, you create them on your computer and upload them to the workspace/webpages folder. Note that if you create a page called about.html and upload it to workspace/webpages then it will end up at comicname.comicgenesis.com/about.html - there will be no "webpages" in the url. This sometimes confuses people.
I meant the tag line of the html page, which is for the comic page: <link>
The line is changed automatically. So no, the author does not have to change the text. The system has been set up so that (in theory) the author changes the templates once when they first join to look the way they want and then for years all they have to do is upload new comics and the server takes care of the rest.

(That is the theory. In practice, people change the look of their comics many times - sometimes as often as every two or three months.)

Glad to hear that you are getting the hang of it! :D

I see, and soon as the admin option for manual update is running, the author is able to update it
at once instead of waiting for the update day. Slowly, I make progress XD

Yeah, the reason about the navi buttons is, that the cover is the only page so far, but I already uploaded 2 more pages, but the server had not updated them yet. More adds, links and options will follow for sure, but like I said, this is just the start and to see my comic run is a good thing. Thank you very much for your compliment, I really appreciate it. I will do my best to make a good comic ;)
