Updating, Not the Comic But The Html of my Other Pages

Post by FavouriteKitten »

I hope my title makes sense. I *think* that's what I mean to say...I'm only semi-computer-literate!

So I thought while I was waiting for the password thingy to be sorted out on my new comic, I'd play around with my existing comic to make it prettier. Nothing terribly drastic, I was just tweaking a bit here and there...adding a new link or two, and updating the "cast" page with new pictures and additions.

I made my changes with the html file in notepad...uploaded it (I use Core FTP Lite if that's relevant somehow) and went to run a full update. That worked...but I realised I'd made a couple stupid typos that were making images not come out properly and such, so I went back, fixed them, uploaded it, and ran a full update.

And...nothing happened. I tried a few more times and while it does seem to show that the queue is going down, the changes aren't happening.

I'm sure this is the point in which someone is going to say "Press control+F5 to do a hard refresh on your page". But I did that, for one...and also I went to have a look in my public_html folder to sneak a peek if it had updated my pages, and my changes hadn't made it into there.

Of course now I've run out of ways to figure it out, except to keep doing the same thing over and over and over again and marvel as to why it refuses to work.

Is something broken that just happened to break in between the times I ran the first and the second update...or am I doing something foolish here? And now I think I'll go wander off to cause trouble for someone else...

Let us assume that you have a page called cast.html - the normal procedure for updating it would be to put the new cast.html page in the workspace/webpages folder and then trigger an update (or wait for the comic to update automatically).

Assuming that you did that, then there are two possible reasons for it not to update: the first would be that the server is not seeing the new version as a new copy so it ignores it. The solution to that is to make a new cast.html file on your computer, copy+paste the contents of the old cast.html page into that one, delete the current copy in the workspace/webpages folder and upload the new one. Hopefully the server will now see that one as a new version.

The second possibility is that the queue is long and when you tried to update your comic, it was added to the queue but did not get processed as other comics were being processed as well. If that was the case, each time you triggered a new update, your comic was puled out of its place and put at the back of the queue making it seem to not update.

Cheers for that. That's exactly the process I'm following...

As for the solutions, I know it's not the second thing, because I always make sure there's not a big huge queue before I jump in there and do something like that, because I'm impatient and hate being, like, 95th in line...

I didn't get a chance to try the other solution because I figured I might as well try it again today since I was in siteadmin updating my comic anyway. I didn't touch anything in my files, I just ran "full update" and hoped for the best. And...it worked.

Only, my comic page didn't update! XD I changed the date on the file to yesterday's date and ran a regular update and still nothing. It's still sitting there in my "workspace" folder and it's not being moved to the public_html folder. Double-checked the date to make sure I wasn't entering in weird years or months. Filename was 20090226.jpg on the first try and 20090225.jpg on the second.

Anyway, I'm not too fussed...I assume if I wait a while and then try again it'll work. Just throwing this out there in case it's a symptom of a funky glitch or something that the admins might want to know about because I think I've seen a topic or two with other people having problems with getting comics to update. (Of course there is always the possibility that the problem is all me!)
