Recommend An FTP Program
I was using SmartFTP for awhile, but now they no longer offer their free version, so I needed to find a new one. I tried a couple suggest on the CGWiki (who's names I can't recall just now) and searched on my own, and finally found one I liked called CoreFTP.
The reason why I didn't like any of the other ones was because whenever I would save my edited HTML files, all my line breaks would be forfit and I'd have just a huge jumble of code. I hate that look, but sometimes I looked the other way and left it, but it completely screws up my Javascript.
CoreFTP was working out fine for awhile, but I notice it does it too.
Can anyone recommend me a good FTP program that won't do this?
Thanks

Re: Recommend An FTP Program
I Concur. Don't use an editor - use notepad. And Filezilla is a good FTP program.
Re: Recommend An FTP Program
I always edit my html from the saved copy on my computer, not from the one already in the workspace. I have no idea what FTP does to my files because I don't try to edit them afterwards. I'm also comfortable with the idea that if anything happens to CG, I have a copy of all my code.

Re: Recommend An FTP Program
I actually have the default editor set up as Notepad, but still, for some reason - more and more often - when I save, it automatically forgets all the line breaks and puts in to a streaming line of congested code. Very frustrating.
You make a good point, Wendybird. I may have to start doing that instead. Just download a copy of my files, edit them on my own computer, and re-upload them eachtime.
I actually tried FileZilla, now that I go to look for it I remember. I don't remember why I didn't like it, it may have been this exact reason, but I can't remember anymore.

Re: Recommend An FTP Program
yo - i have the same issue with SmartFTP
alternative FREE ftp programs would be nice
i dont understand what all this code editing talk is about - an FTP program shouldn't alter your website's code... just upload stuff
i personally use MS frontpage03 (oh the herecy) but i type in all code manually... mainly just use it to check the layout of things and whatnot - and it works fine for me

I switched to FileZilla; everyone who's mentioned it on the forums seems to like it. I haven't had a problem with it the two times I've used it since switching from SmartFTP.

hi, everyone
i'm a newbie. i have been reading the faqs and i'm still clueless. Wasn't there at one point in time a ftp for dummies?
or was it html? well, anyway... i'm probably not the only one that has the problem of not catching on quickly enough i seem to have lost the base coding templete in one of the other threads. i will find it though.
thanks,
jake

True, but all (at least all I've seen) FTP program allow you to edit your pages through the FTP program, and when your done and saved it will upload it. I like doing that because it's quicker for me, and convenient.Webkilla wrote: i dont understand what all this code editing talk is about - an FTP program shouldn't alter your website's code... just upload stuff

I've been using CORE FTP lite for years. It's served me just dandy.

Hah, nicely done. Yeah I'm using it too. Do you edit on your FTP? And, if so, do you notice my above problem happening at all? Maybe it's a preference/option I can change or something ...That guy wrote:I've been using CORE FTP lite for years. It's served me just dandy.

Re: Recommend An FTP Program
in my searches i found fling it's free at present but i haven't tried to actually use it just yet
http://www.nchsoftware.com/ftp/index.html
something about integrating windows and doors to gain easier access to house oops sorry reading too many windows at once.
the real thing says and I quote: "Fling avoids the chore of navigating complicated software interfaces and instead utilizes Windows existing file explorer. Fling runs behind the scenes and allows you to automatically upload or transfer files from anywhere on your PC using the Windows right click menu. Simply right click on the file you want to upload and select "Fling Upload". It's as easy as that. But best of all, Fling is completely free." end quote

Although it sounds like a great tool for some people, I'm just too paranoid to allow free software to integrate at that level with my operating system.

Re: Recommend An FTP Program
I definitely do all my work in notepad (editpad lite to be precise... its also free and much more customizable) and i use FireFTP to do my ftp stuff. It just opens a new window in Firefox which serves as an FTP client. It stores all the info you want, work just fine, and doesn't come with all the extra baggage and start time that other free FTP programs I've tried have. I would definitely recommend checking out both these free products.

Re: Recommend An FTP Program
I'm liking the sound of that, booze-man. Only thing is, and this may shock you to your core, but I don't have Firefox. I just can't see the point of having to get another webbrowser when I already have one that works fine.
I may have to though if only for this, or DL the files to my own computer and edit them off of FTP.

Re: Recommend An FTP Program
Well, so long as you have something that you can work with and are happy to use then it's all good. Pretty much any program you care to name will have people saying "It's the best - use it!" and just as many people saying "It's horrible - don't use it!".
However - about browsers - I recommend to anybody who creates webpages (or in this case, webcomics) to have more than one browser, preferably at least the three big ones (Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari) installed on their computer. This is so that you can see what your site looks like on different browsers. They don't all behave the same, so what you think looks fine, half your readers (or potential readers) might find unreadable.

Re: Recommend An FTP Program
I completely agree. The background for my website shows up differently in IE than it does in Firefox and Safari because of how IE reads color hexcodes. So the face on IE is darker than the background color and its the otherway around on firefox and safari (which is the way I want it to actually look). It still works, but with other parts of the site (links, page layout, image stuff, etc) you want to make sure it works on every main browser possible or else you could be alienating possible readers.Dr Neo Lao wrote:I recommend to anybody who creates webpages (or in this case, webcomics) to have more than one browser, preferably at least the three big ones (Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari) installed on their computer. Re: Recommend An FTP Program
For that I'd recommend Browser Shots. It allows you to test your page on a number of different browsers, without having to install them yourself. All it needs is time, but with your ability to choose which browser you want to check, and if you only want the big three, then takes a lot less time.
