I Need Help...BADLY.

Post by HellionAngel5 »

Okay, I'm a complete n00b at this and I have a number of problems with my site.

-I don't know how to use the HTML code (*doesn't pay attention in computer class* )

-CGWiki obviously hates me.

And probably everything else...

Can someone please, PLEASE help me?!

Okay. Here's 3 questions:

Question #1: I was at the HTML Generator (http://cwcomics.comicgenesis.com/genera ... rator.html), adding things like Archives, About, Gallery, Cast, Links...kind of what the famous webcomic artists have on their sites. But then when I got to the end (or near the end), it asked me if I wanted the news to be on indextemplate. I picked the easiest for me or would seem easiest--news.html. As I got to the end, it asked me about html and what to put on my site. That's the problem. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE IT. Can someone teach me how to use it?

Question #2: I started posting pages of my webcomic and when I checked the site, it had numerous updates (pgs 1-10 http://darkheaven.comicgenesis.com). I think I messed up...can someone look to see what I did wrong?

Question #3: The CGWiki...how can I log in? I've read about how you have to be active and have more posts here, but I'm not sure...

If you don't want to have anything to do with the HTML, make sure you read the instructions carefully. Clicking any of the black links under the "Main links", "Secondary links" or any checkbox in the "News" section will require you to write additional HTML. If you don't check any of those boxes, you can safely leave the HTML completely alone, and just follow the instructions in the (admittedly bad) FTP tutorial at the end, or one of the ones in the wiki.

At least, i think that's what you're asking. Being more specific would be helpful.

I'll see if it works and I'll get back to you on that.

Quick Edit: Okay, I think I know what to ask now. When I reached the end, it asked me to type in the HTML in 2 BLANK boxes so that I can transfer it to my FTP program. I have the Filezilla FTP program and I know how to use it too. Thing is, I can't see or don't know where the HTML for everything is. Also, I wanted to put Wiki, Contact, and Gallery on my site too. Could that be the problem?

Keep it simple to start with.

Try and leave as much out as you can to get you started. You can always change it / upgrade it later. I'd be more than happy to help you with writing out html code.

Q2: The reason that all your comics showed up in one hit is because of the way you named the comic images. You named them "Dark Heaven chp.1 pg.1_3.jpg" and so on.

This will not work for Comic Genesis.

Short version: name your files for the date that you want a comic to be displayed. So if you have a comic that you want to be displayed for Christmas this year, you would save the image with the name 20081225.jpg which means 2008 as the year, 12 as the month and 25 as the day = YYYYMMDD.jpg.

So you ought to rename your images: 20080118.jpg 20080119.jpg 20080120.jpg and so on (or whatever dates you prefer).

More information here, specifically Step 2.

Q3: For the CGWiki, you use your forum name and password. make sure that you type in "HellionAngel5" and not "hellionangel5" or some other combination.

Also, it may help to make sure that you log into the forum with "HellionAngel5" and not "aellionangel5" - the forum will let you log in that way, but siteadmin will not, nor will the CGWiki. Log into the forum properly first, then you should be able to log into the wiki.

Okay.

With the generator, do I have to have an html code to send it to my site, wait for an email, or something to that effect? Also, CGWiki worked and I will rename everyone of my files for the webcomic.

Quick Edit: This goes out to CW. At the end of the generator, do I have to write out the html or not?

You will need to save the html to your computer as two files - indextemplate.html and dailytemplate.html.

Once you have those two files, you will need to transfer them to the server with an ftp program of some sort. Check the tutorials in the wiki for more detailed instructions (link in my sig).

Windows XP, or Vista?
Can you go to help > about, in Internet Explorer and find the version number?

Also, try refreshing the generator page a couple of times - make sure it says beta 3.7 in the title bar on the page with all the forms.
