I think part of the stigma sometimes associated with transgender people has to do with the circumstances under which they're first encountered (At least in my experience... present company excepted). Yeah, it's a fairly obscure move where one pawn moves two spaces forward from its starting location, and afterwards a pawn on the same row as it moves one space behind it (the space it skipped over in the two-space move) and takes it.

Obviously the obscurity of it both helps and hurts the joke :)
