The artist tells the story as if the main character is looking back on his early career, having achieved at least some measure of success since then. He's basically telling the story to the reader in narrative boxes.

Websnark refers to the first situation as the Cerebus syndrome or something like that. Apparently it happens quite often. I've never really considered it but I see it a lot in my gag strips... Flashbacks are a good way to get across backstory bits. Zap! does this particularly well.
