Dear Masked Retriever: I was wondering if there was any connection between Dr. Sappho and the following quote from Dune: "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by will ...

Oh, QUITE. The notion of "dominion over the animals" pretty much means that Fundamentalist Christianity supports any and all mucking with animals, and materials sciences, so long as said mucking in no way threatens the divine nature of the human experience. The insulin-producing bacteria probably ~s...

I contend that it will happen, and even that it will happen in America.

But I do so as a hope, not as a certainty. Much to my sorrow.

...

DAMN but I watch too much McGloughlin Group.

Ahhhhhhhhhh, buckytubeules. Pretty much my favorite candidate for massive engineering projects like skyhooks and worldbridges. But of course, to do this, we'll need a few things, like mass production technologies. Fortunately, mass production of buckytubes isn't ~that~ far off from the look of thing...

Heh. No, I just waited a little while extra before complaining about a lack of comments. Although I suspect comments are going to be fairly light over the break due to many people visiting limited-access relatives, even though Tuesday's comic should raise more than a few eyebrows if I've done it rig...

Our progenetor had provided us with a pretty impressive open-source library for carbon-bonded nanotech. It's really quite amazing. But even the extremophiles, with their pre-shrunk proteins which actually work better unfolded by extreme heat, or wadded up with sub-zero temperatures, or bombarded wit...

Well, I *am* updating at 9PM Pacific time the *previous* day now. I figured it'd help out the conversation since people'd be awake and possibly on the internet when the comic updates.

*shrug*

Oh. And that means the new comic for Friday's due in an hour or so...

Eh, I say, EH!

Suffice to say I have so much evil involving ASCII planned it's not even funny. But it will be. Oh yes it will be...

... Note to self: SPELLCHECK IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR PROOFREADING!!!!!!!! :o I wanted to draw Rhonda's eye swirling with the brown color but I don't want to reduce the relative impact of much, much later strips when animation is used to specific ends. I have a very strict set of rules for how I use...

Well, fortunately for potential nanoroboticists, there's already someone in the business who's had a few billion years of experience, and to make matters better she's an open-source nut. For somatic nanites, I'd generally advise sugar-run technologies. Honestly, in fact, I see no reason to...

Aw, c'mon, that was pretty creepy, wasn't it?

Nobody even batted an eyelash.

I got all goosebumpy when *I* first envisioned ASCII prying open her eye like that.

Ya gotta love a forum where a discussion about the age of majority can segue into cellular biology on a dime. I guess you could have some good ol' fashioned nanobots tracking and issuing repair commands on individual cells... but you'd need a way to do it non-destructively (rather difficult) or else...

Actually the majority of the cast is like, Real Ultimate Jailbait at this point. Well, maybe they imported some laws from, oh, Canada or some other place? Age of consent here for most things is 14, though our current Prime Minister wants to bump it to 16... long and stupid story there. ... Britain ...

I figure he's talking about Rhonda, in which case he's got a point. Actually the majority of the cast is like, Real Ultimate Jailbait at this point. :o The only thing keeping me from outright panic over this is the fact that Clark Kent is supposed to be 14(!!!) when Smallville starts up and the shee...

for Pierce: do you think you take more after your mom, or you dad? Mom, probably. I like fiddling with science, I'm pretty comfort-driven... All I seem to have gotten from my dad is the Freight Train Libido, which I'm told was pretty dangerous back in his day. Sure causes me enough trouble... :shif...

Heh. It IS certainly the case that, even though the buffer's now down to 1 finished strip and 3 pencilled ones, a given strip has usually been somewhere in the "evilcloud" in my head of different subplots, plots, and twists through which I plan to drag my poor audience for at least, like, a month. W...

When I was drawing this comic I actually laughed out loud at Alex's expression on panel 3.

Yeah, I laugh at my own comics. Actually that's half the reason I do it.
