Re: House of Leaves
Well, there's nothing wrong with shying away from complex undertakings. Now, now. I have no trouble with complexity - I read physics and philosophy for fun. And there is depth in House of Leaves, no matter what Narnian says. I never said there wasn't depth - but I felt it was too murky to...

Excellent work, WanderWolf. Another classic, but news-created "quote": "I gets thar fustest with the mostest." --- Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. In fact, Forrest was well-spoken, and when asked how he won his battles, he said "I try to arrive at the expected field before my enemy, wit...

Aw poo. I edited the first post with my rebuttal instead of adding a new post. Anyway, just click that link and I think you'll get the gist of the book. Not very coherent :D I started to read it and it was one of the few books I decided not to finish. :( I have several thousand books I want to read...

Re: House of Leaves
I prefer my books to be coherent. I put this book in the same lot as James Joyce "Ulysess" - it is so confusing people think it must be great if nobody can understand it. I prefer to read books like "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" by Thomas Kuhn, "Parallel Worlds" By Michio Kaku, "Catch-22...

Jehovah's Witness theology is ultimately derived from the ancient heresy of Arianism which denied the deity of Jesus (and the Holy Spirit). It was addressed by Athanasius and the first 2 Ecumenical Councils in 325 (Ephesus) and 385 (Constantinople). The final result being the the Nicene Creed. I bel...

I would like to give you all a quick question...or not so quick question: If I offered you a glass of crystal clear water to you, but before I actually hand it over you clearly see me put a drop of poison into the glass and tell you that it is poison I put into the drink. Would you drink it? Now pl...

Ok, I gotta ask....why not? I suspect he is taking the position Easter is a pagan holiday that has been incorporated into the Christian calendar. (ditto for Christmas) There are two views on this: 1. These holidays should not be celebrated by Christians since they are basically pagan holidays that ...
The biggest and most glaring failure of the Titanic was not carrying enough lifeboats for all. Had she being carrying full capacity every lifeboat sailing away fully loaded would have barely held 1/3 of those aboard. It is even worse - the lifeboats they had were lowered when they weren't full (usu...

Ain't English fun! You mean french cognates in english language? Nah, we stole 'em fair an'd square. James D. Nicoll said one of my favorite quotes: "The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on o...
