I think that the big snake's name was Nidhogg or Niddhog. He lives at the bottom of the world tree and eats at its roots.

Niflhiem (which contains Helhiem/the house of Hel) is the lowest point in the universe, under the 3rd root of Yggdrasil. It's where all those who die in any way other then in battle. Like from old age, those old, lousy slackers!
